This is what happens to me. Usually, out quick when I first hit the rack, but within 2-3 of hours I wake-up with a start (thank you PTSD) and then my mind just will not back off! I can never go back to sleep afterwards. Damnit
Eventually my body just flats wears itself out and I get 8 hours. But that can take a week sometimes.

It's also hard to get out of my heated waterbed on these cold mornings. :bored:
I will be getting up earlier when warmer weather arrives.

I'm retired too, but my sleep schedule is unpredictable. I rarely get more than about 4-6 hours straight, but probably average 8 hours in a 24 hour period. It doesn't matter how late I get in bed I wake up at 6 AM or earlier. It isn't unusual for me to go to bed at 2AM but wake up at 6 AM. I'll eat breakfast, do a few chores around the house and may crash in the recliner for an hour or two from 10 to 11 or noon.

My wife usually goes to bed around 10. While the house is quiet, I often get started on hobbies or home projects and work till I get sleepy. If I go to bed at 10, I'm awake by 4 or 5AM. No sense in lying in bed trying to fall back asleep. I get up and do something. I could be on my exercise bike at almost any hour.

I just find the QUALITY of sleep is better if I just keep on doing something until I can't stay awake any longer. Then when I wake up, I get up rather than trying to force myself to sleep on a set schedule. Being retired and having no set schedule most days helps with that.

We all love a good night’s sleep because it feels good to cave into your tiredness. I wish I didn’t need sleep. Think how much more time you would have if you didn’t need to sleep.

To your question: 11:00PM to 6:00AM on a typical day. I’m a morning person much more than a night owl.

Used to go to bed at 11:30pm and wake up at 6am. But recently I waking up more often at 4:30ish and feel wide awake. If I lay there, I fall back asleep and have to get up around 6:30 and feel dead tired. I need to try getting up and starting doing stuff at 4:30. Would be great to need 1.5-2 hours less sleep a day.

I feel this so hard...that damn sleep regression. My 2 yo is just now starting to consistently sleep through the night, so naturally the missus wants to have another kid to make sure I don't make it to 40. She must think I have great life insurance.
