Even with brand new blades I tend to still have lines.. sanding them is super easy tho! Can't wait to see this one done!

What’s your struggle with the hand plane? It intimidates a lot of people, but it’s very easy once setup properly.

Preach! Many people get discouraged by cheap and/or dull tools, then assume it’s a problem with them, and who wants to try something again if it’s going to make them feel shitty? I had the same evolution, but this book elevated my understanding and abilities:

In fact, I thought my skills in general must be less than I thought until I upgraded other tools. My first upgrade was from a contractors saw to a Unisaw. The quality of my work and the speed at which I was able to work both improved dramatically. That's what sparked my high end tool spending spree, lol

Boils down to you get what you pay for! Funny, my table saw upgrade was also what inspired that notion for me. Especially true for hand tools; though, I’d argue that I can now transform a crappy hand plane and chisel into something functional. The edge will simply dull faster. I do think a person can accomplish a lot with decent tools, but the experience won’t be as great/ they’ll work much harder than me to get the same results (if even possible).

I think the key is that you can use ok tools if you've experienced tools that work great and have learned how to properly get the most out of the cheaper tools. Then again, I do have some tools that will never be used again.

Those look familiar! Installed a couple on the canoe table today so I can wheel it out of the garage for sanding. Finally hit 35 degrees in Minnesota, so projects can restart! (Once the rain stops).

My first box is done and I'll hand it off tomorrow. It was fun, I learned a lot and built some useful tools along the way. Although it's a simple thing, there were many challenges.

I don't think I'll try the barrel hinges again anytime soon! What a massive PITA. The dowel pin holder turned out ok. The mitered frame around it wasn't planned and I threw it together last-minute. I'm not happy with the sloppy mitered corners, and I wish I grain matched them, but that's another lesson! Take your time or don't do it. The "Made by Carl" on the back is from a branding iron my other half got me for Christmas. It's whimsical and fun. Good thing we aren't expecting kids!

    Looks fantastic!

I know you put a lot of time and effort into the grain matched corners etc.. with those inserts it distracts the eye from the grain so next time you may not have to be so careful about it.

    Definitely looks amazing!

Thanks! It turned out better than expected. I just used leftover wood that wasn’t good enough for customer jobs…

My struggle was buying a cheap plane from Home Depot and trying to use it straight out of the box. It was not set up properly, was not sharpened, and I had no idea what I was doing honestly. I did alot of youtube learning and figured out the basics, but still haven't given it a second shot yet. My main problems were going against the grain and trying to remove too much at once. I'll give it a go again on the next project, but that will hopefully be something smaller than a table top.

Really jinxed myself with that restarting projects talk… amazing what the forecast being off by 2 degrees does around here.
