Shipping the insides would be a great idea !

People that would buy these it would be simple to source the steel and finish the outside.

Back to working on my truck this weekend. Fixing tears in the bodywork around the engine.

Turned out my plasma cutter wasn't working right, it was always stuck on minimum power, but PrimeWeld stepped up and is shipping me a replacement unit!

    20220227_152203_resized.jpg
Struggled to cut 1/8" plate, hmmm....

Anyway, I can use the plasma cutter on body panels, right? I plan to grind an area for the return clamp and to start the cut, then hand trace over the paint. Is that dumb?

I'm going to try cutting and bending some 1/16" stainless panels, then weld it over the body sheet metal after cutting out the cracked/fatigued areas. Going to see if I can tig it in place, but might fall back on mig. It is in a corrosion prone place, so trying to minimize rust, but obviously the base metal is steel bodywork.

Oh and another question, can anyone recommend for or against this item for grinding tig electrodes? So far I've been doing it by hand on a bench grinder with inconsistent results.

I do. I have it on my milwuakee rotary tool with the provided wheels. I'm not the greatest tig welder but I've seen some good results with it. They come out up to my (low) standards lol

To grind your tungsten you are doing it on a new wheel just for grinding tungsten ??

Any other wheel will contaminate your tungsten. Causing issues.

You do sharpen it the correct way with the tip pointing in the upward direction to the wheel and not across the wheel .

There are a few of these devices to sharpen Tungsten some good some better.

I agree with your points (not across), and use only for tungsten).

But, I was using the "tip updward" method when my fingers got injured as shown in the post a few days ago. Not 100% sure what happened, but the tip may have dug into the wheel and pulled me in.

You can get the same point with the tip facing downward. Takes a little more practice, but safer. For me, I can go across to make the point, then just briefly grind vertical to finish with the grooves going vertical and it's easier to get a good point. Seems to work fine.

I mounted a small grinder on my TIG cart and use it only for my electrodes.

    Good question.

I'll do the math sometime today. I'm assuming for a pair?

I think I saw you already use one at school, but if not, I know you'll enjoy it. I like the SMAW too. It's super smooth and easy to start an arc.

I hope you have as good a luck as I am with Primeweld. My 60amp plasma cutter is coming up on 3yrs and I have punished it, with never a hiccup. The first day I had the cuttter I decided to see if I could make it fail. I had a 3 foot piece of railroad track and I had been wanting to cut off a 12" piece to keep for an anvil, and scrap the rest.

It took about an hour set at 60amps, but I got through it. I didn't hit the duty cycle once. Of course, I was stopping to change position and knock dross slag out of the way, but I really tried to overheat it and couldn't.

I try not to buy from "that part of the world", but sorry to say, Primeweld fan boi here. I love my Hobart MIG, so I am not a totally lost cause.

Edit, tagged the wrong post somehow.

    @Kwikvette

BTW, I tapped the extension cord for the outlet for the grinder. Somebody on here called me out on it saying I was pulling from the same voltage supply as if I had just tapped the welder plug cable or internal.

I only tapped the extension cord in case I had to send it back for warranty work. I didn't want to give any reason for them to reject my warrantly claim.

After a couple of years of telling myself I’m gonna buy a welder I finally did it. Got a Hobart 210. Still waiting on a bottle since apparently there’s a shortage, but I’m still having fun with the shielded wire. Still adjusting to it since it’s been 10 years since I’ve consistently welded and I’ve never used shielded wire before, so don’t judge me too much…

    Why would it matter?

Can you use the grinder and the welder at the same time? Not likely.

Question. I’ve gone through 3 contact tips with a 10 lb spool. They keep getting gunked up and I’m using nozzle gel to try to keep tips lubricated and keep the nozzle clean. Is this normal? And I just think they need to last longer?

I've always ran with the cup pulled out so the contact tip is about a 1/8" inside the cup.

    I can't remember when I last changed a tip.

Yep I do use one at school!

Been enjoying it so far, and comparing it to higher priced machines, it really is a great bargain.

It's good to hear you've had great luck with your cutter. Been looking at a Lincoln Tomahawk Air, but really, we'll see what I end up with later on.

Can't wait to start aluminum tomorrow!

Placed an order for a Furick/CK clear cup and gas lense which I can't wait to try. We use collet bodies and have a small variety of cups to use at school.
