non-serviceable means for 2WD models the propeller shaft has no grease zerks to routinely add more lubricant and flush out old worn lube, so you'll just replace the parts when they go bad

2WD uses longer propeller shaft because there's no transfer case sitting in between, I'm not exactly sure about the diameter

Oh gotcha. Makes sense. Dunno why but I thought non-serviceable meant couldn’t not be replaced! Haha

Our 4x4 Tundra will most likely be nearby to pull out the new 2WD Tacoma if we get it stuck.

I'm not an off-roader so 2WD is perfect for me, and quite a bit cheaper.

I've got a 2016 TRD OR in 2wd with a locker, and I love it!

The only time I've gotten stuck is when I was new to the game and tried a water crossing in street tires, lol... That ended up being deeper than I thought it'd be as well, lesson learned.

After getting some nice all terrains and learning to be a better driver I've yet to get stuck again.

I live in Florida and off-road in Ocala National Forest. Flat, sugar sand, and some mud - no problems thus far! I've also driven on the beach when they have the 4x4 only signs out and have had no problems.

2wd Tacoma's are pretty capable, especially with the locker.

1, I didn’t know they made 2WD Off Roads and 2, I didn’t know that it would come with a rear locker! Cool stuff!
I have a 2WD SR5 and really can’t complain. I don’t off-road, and the truck does fine on dirt trails when we go camping. I wonder what it would cost to swap rear axles with one with a locker…I know probably cheaper than an ARB locker.

curious you got stuck in a water crossing. What we’re the conditions? I live in New Orleans and my one fear would be escaping flooding. I’m considering a lift just for more water clearance. Hope the 2WD won’t let me down….

I recently added a Detroit Truetrac to my prerunner and it's been great. Maybe look into that

That’s not too bad a price for the part. What did it cost for install?
Do you think it is a serious upgrade to the stock “LSD”?

2022 SR5 2WD V6 here. No regrets here about no 4x4, I live in south texas where it never snows and it is my DD so the higher mpg is nice. But I do regret not going for the TRD with technology package.

I made a post asking for advice when it happened, here's the thread with pics.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/back-end-submerged-should-i-be-worried.721620/

It was right after I bought it and I had no idea what I was doing, lol. It was basically a very small offshoot from the main river that crossed the middle of the trail I was on. The crossing had a deep spot and a shelf I was unaware of, and when I hit it the back got stuck for a few hours. Water seeped in at the rear of the door and the underlayment soaked it up like a sponge. Nothing got to the engine bay and no water sucked into the exhaust or anything. Just a learning moment for me. I got pulled out after a while and continued on the trail to get home and then cleaned it all up.

Nothing too scary in hindsight, but I changed my rear differential oil to be safe, disassembled the interior and cleaned and dried everything out, wd40'd my electrical connections, cleaned my rear parking sensors, etc. Been fine ever since. No issues, no corrosion, nothing bad came from it.

I've regretted every 2wd truck I've had. With the weight distribution, lack of 4wd in any traction limited situation is a liability.

Went with East Coast Gear Supply. They assembled the entire setup with new gear ratio so I'm running 255/80/17 now. That was about 1350 and someone local in socal installed it for about $350.

Don't get me wrong. My next truck would be a 4x4. But that'll probably be another 2nd gen or a 1st gen someday. Primarily use my truck for camping and hauling the fam to the beach.
