Hey TW! I’m looking for some advice on mounting an L bracket to the outside of the cab? I need to mount some rotopax (just 2) longways. I was thinking just drilling some l brackets into the rail.

towards the tailgate it narrows to 1 inch so not sure if l bracket would be strong enough.

Are you wanting to mount a bracket to the camper shell or somehow have a bracket the sticks up and holds the cans, or . If you drill into the fiberglass you're going to need backing plates to distribute the weight, if you're just talking about some L brackets that stick up to carry the cans you're going to have to go under that ill fitting shell (think about water intrusion issues here) and if that's the case I'd go ahead and have them attach on the inside to the cargo management system as well. They'll need to be thick enough not to flex and allow the cans to bang into the side of your shell- for some reason the windows on all of them are ridiculously expensive to replace.

It looks like you have artificial raingutters on the shell already so another option would be to find a set of used rain gutter racks on ebay, local, whatever and put your preferred bar length on.

I was thinking about drilling into the camper shell but the issue is with liquids, I'm afraid it will rip the fiberglass apart with the weight of sloshing liquids even with a backing plate. It's all water sealed so I was hoping to fit an L Bracket outside of the shell on the truck bed sides (drilling through the plastic down into the side and water sealing). Not sure if the 2 inches I have from shell to outer edge of truck bed would be long enough for an L Bracket or if I should just

I'm not an engineer but I doubt a L bracket would be strong enough unless it was pretty thick- and even then I don't think the bed is strong enough on it's own, it's pretty thin. That's why I suggested the Z bracket that ran under the shell and also connected to the cargo management track in the bed but I still think it's either going to have to be pretty stout or better yet, have it jut out just far enough to weld some gussets on the bend. Even with that I still think I'd want something along the top of the cans to help stabilize it.

At this point I think I'd just build an exocage for the bed- much stronger and much more versatile. Some members here have built some really nice looking ones that should give you some ideas.
