I’ve never had a large gouge in the side of my tire nor have I ever a tire grenade going down the freeway, but I would consider turning that one into a spare.

Exactly my thoughts, definitely wouldn’t feel safe driving on the highway with that tire.

I had a front tire blow on my 87 Camaro and it wasn’t fun at all.

I don't see any cord. Is there a bulge? I would put it on the rear and watch for it to bulge in the next couple days. If it doesn't, then I wouldn't give it a second thought.

The gouge in the side wall is a concern, no hi speed driving. In the 70's I patched 4 bias ply tires with a boot patches and tubes with slashed sidewalls for a guy who put them on a auction car with the tire patch to the inside. The guy gave me 60 to do it. It went out like that. The old owner's comment was the sign said FOR sale not Must buy.

Update on this. Took it to tire kingdom fully expecting them to say new tires. The guy looked at it said it should be fine and is just cosmetic because no cords are showing and if it wasn’t such a big ass tire it’d probably be done for but the area where the damage is is really thick on the tires.

Go stick a knife through the sidewall and save yourself the worry of trying to come to a decision. Trucks are expensive, your life or someone else's cannot be replaced. Not worth the risk you are putting your property, your life and someone else in. 99 times out of 100 it would be fine. The question to ask yourself is not if you think it will blow but what would you do if it did.

I had a come to Jesus moment with tires when my son was born. We had a 2007 4Runner and the stock tires were crap. Around 20k miles I thought I should put tires on it. I was surfing the internet for a decent set but kinda cheap and I looked over and saw those huge 8 month old blue eyes starring back at me. $1,200 later that car had a new set of Michelin's. And I didn't lose sleep over it.

If the tire store looked at it and said it was fine, drive it. I couldn't see enough from the photo to say.

LOL, my wife ask me why I never come to bed before she is asleep anymore. I looked at our 13 and 7 year old fighting and said "it's not worth the risk".

Well, call me weird but I don't fuck around when it comes to tires. As the Boar's Head commercial says, "Compromise Elsewhere". Any concerns at all with my vehicle tires and they are gone!

Here is another way to look at it if you want. The tire guy you talked to said it was ok and he is probably right but if you brought that tire in dismounted and asked me to put it on your truck I would decline because of the liability. Now I don’t know this for fact of course but I’m willing to bet he would do the same thing. I would get a new tire run it with the other 3 till they need replaced then get a new set.

Yeah agreed to the above. Despite it being more than likely ok I’d be driving with butt cheeks fully clenched in the slow lane on the highway just don’t trust them. Gonna get a new set I would have wanted to replace them all in a year or so anyway.

I'd drive around town on it and I might do short ( < 10 mile ) drives at highway speeds but I wouldn't
    take it across the country.

Isn't your life worth the price of a tire ? Just replace it and move on with your life. Keep it for a spare.

His your spare tire the same size if so then swap it and keep it as a spare this way no need to worry about it. Just saying
