In all fairness I am really just a guy selling cars and making a living. People hate us for some earned reputation from long ago and I get that, it's fine. People get mad at us for negotiation tactics when in reality we don't even want to negotiate, that's all on the buyer! If you just went in and paid sticker like anything else you buy then you would have less problems I imagine. At the end of the day I enjoy being a gatekeeper since that's the only real power I have, I get to tell stupid people to fuck off! HAHA

If the dealer is initiating a 'conversation', its bullshit. You can just bet on that.

Most people understand that the sales guy is not the real issue. Its their manager or someone else above them. Most people also understand what happens to their bank account if you do not negotiate. Most people.

Someone mentioned there is no cap on used markup, but that some areas like canada there is a limit on new vehicles.

So maybe thats whats going on. He can make 10k extra on a used but only 2k on a new one.

I tend to agree that they are all basically the same, but the delivery can be totally different even though the end result is the same. For example, I won't set foot in the door of the Toyota dealership closest to me because they have a reputation for asking for the keys to the car you are trading in so they can appraise it, then not giving the keys back so you can't leave while they high pressure you. This particular dealer is also in an area where they deal with a large percentage of sub-prime buyers. When I purchased a Dodge Ram a while back (yea I know! lol), I got a pre-approval from my credit union before I went to the dealer. The first dealer told me they wouldn't deal with my credit union because they were from out of state, when I knew full well they were just trying to force me into letting them finance me. I walked out and went to the next closest dealer, who apologetically said yes they would deal with my credit union but they needed a wire transfer since they were from out of state. When I bought my Taco last May my dealer gave me a price when I said I was going to deal with my credit union, but they told me they could do better if I would give them the chance to finance me since they made money on placing my loan and could reflect that in the price. They all end up in the same place, it's just a question of how they do it that makes the difference in your experience. And since we can't buy directly from the distributor or manufacturer, they are a necessary evil when we want a new vehicle.

I just bought a 2022 DCSB TRD sport 4x4. All the options my Limited has..and many more that were not available in 2016 (power rear window, adaptive cruise, apple car play etc). I went in wanting $32k based on carvana. I paid $33.5k in 2017 with 24k miles and now it has 81K. Initially they offered $23k and I pay $5k location fee. I said nope...I was willing to walk because at the end of the day, I really like my current truck, options, payment ($0), etc. They looked at my truck in detail and test drove it. They came up to $31.6k trade in and down to $1600 location fee. Location fee is crap but it is the only way to get a new truck I WANT..not just any truck on the lot.

cliff notes: the 2016 limited cost me less than $4k to own and drive almost 60k miles and 5+ years. Dealership still made money..or they wouldn't have agreed to sale. I am happy with my bottom line as well.

Well then most people should already be keen to realize that they’re looking at a $40k truck and if negotiating off $1k is what’s going to help keep the lights on then you need to be looking at a much cheaper vehicle. People just want the “feel good” of getting a “deal” and are willing to make a salesman’s life a living hell over a few hundred bucks. If you like the vehicle then this is what it costs to purchase it, plain and simple.
The days of getting multiple thousands of dollars off a vehicle are over, but so are(for the most part) the days of 80s salesman that’ll throw your trade’s keys onto the roof until you sign the paper. The car industry has largely shifted to customer service centered, with online price shopping we both know you can go down the street, so i have to do the best job possible within my parameters to make sure you still have an excellent buying experience.

Ive purchased exactly one new car in my life, and the people at the dealership lived up to every cliched horror story you have heard about. Total scumbags with laughable technique and zero integrity. Lied and slithered every step of the way. The key is to be aggressive and make them uncomfortable immediately. Dont sign shit. Answer every question of theirs with your own question. Ask them point blank whats their invoice, how much commission they make, and go from there.

I would rather interact wih a kiosk or piece of software.

    drove away 5k under msrp.

Last time I purchased a vehicle at a dealer I told the salesman "go away and leave me alone, if I want to talk I'll come find you".

I got that for years, just ignored all the letters and E-mails. I doubt I'd get what a 2015 TRDOR with under 3K on the odometer from the dealer. [and the frame is rust free, in Michigan one winter is enough to make you cry if you drive it.

I have been selling cars part-time for 35 years, always been fair, honest, and I have repeat customers for years. Never been burned or had one bad deal. I buy right and sell right and still made a decent $50 to $75K a year on top of my full time job. Retired 10 years ago at age 41 and still selling cars. I buy lots of Mustangs,4Runners,Lexus and lots of older Tacomas. I have a great hook up on cars and I do a great reconditioning so I can provide the nicest turn key cars I know how. Yea people don't like car salesman but its mostly the sales manager or GM.
