Who knew that slowing down could help so much? Motivated by rising gas prices, I tried an experiment today and drove 60 mph (instead of my normal 70-80 mph) and achieved the following results.

    2021 TRD Off Road, Manual
    Louisville to Bowling Green
    38 psi on all tires
    50F, calm winds

Edit: three lane interstate the entire way so I could get away with this without being a hinderance...like anyone uses the right lane anyway :frusty:

    I knew that.

But driving 60 on a 80MPH road seems like it takes forever. I'll loose a few MPG to get where I'm going a little faster, I value my time more than a few MPG

Saying that, those are some pretty good numbers

Yes - I'm learning that it makes a huge difference. Also how you accelerate makes a difference too. It's a little frustrating when everyone is jumping out of the gate ahead of you, but it makes a difference.

What size wheels/tires are you on?

Side note: It's painful for me as a 2.7L owner to see all of these V6 drivers posting 26MPG+, since I got the 2.7 specifically for better MPG. Sigh....

I have been getting good or what I call, "insane" gas mileage ever since I passed the 9000 mile mark. It took a while for the stupid transmission to learn my driving habits, but now, routinely get 25-30 around town, and same thing on the highway. Although I DO hate it when I encounter even the slightest grade on the highway, the dang transmission will downshift TWO gears in its quest for gear hunting, and the mileage drops like arock to around 10mpg until I get to the top of the grade. I will attach two pics to show my own mileage....gasmileagehwy1.jpg trdgasmileagearoundtown05292020.jpg

V6 here. Seems that anything over 60mph starts dropping the MPG pretty fast.

The National Maximum Speed Limit (NMSL) was a provision of the federal government of the United States 1974 Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act that effectively prohibited speed limits higher than 55 miles per hour (89 km/h). It was drafted in response to oil price spikes and supply disruptions during the 1973 oil crisis and remained the law until 1995.

Hey man there's something on your dash...

Seriously that's the craziest thing I've seen on this forum in a while.

    Oh look, another mod....

Forget the MPG's you're getting. I gotta know what (and why?) you did to that dash. Is a replacement kit? A wrap? Did you lose a bet?

I will ignore the sarcasm, because even I modified it a little after I took these pics and the subsequent video that is out there called "Installing a wood grain dash kit on a 2019 Toyota tacoma". And yes, that is a complete wood grain dash kit with laser cut wood specifically for my tacoma. And while I don't like particularly the dash cover, I did that to bring a little color to an otherwise ALL BLACK interior. If you think all that is something, check out my complete interior modification video!

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    100 mile trip:
    - 75 minutes at 80 mph
    - 100 minutes at 60 mph
So it'll take an additional 25 minutes. But you'll be a bit more stressed when you arrive after traveling at 80 mph.
But if you're only going 20 miles, that time difference drops to 5 minutes. At that point, why worry?

I'm confused, where does my level of stress variable become a factor? Also, how does one speculate and gauge my stress level to factor this into a viable calculation?

This seems invalid for anyone to calculate including myself.

I do see where you're going with it. There might be something more to it but.... I don't want to think about it. I just drive to get where I'm going. Faster then some, slower than most??

Oooooooh, I know you. I have seen this video before. Now, I don't agree with your color choices or style, I will admit you did great work. The effort you put into it shows. And yes, my first post was very sarcastic. But you can ignore it. I'm just a random guy on the internet.

Don't knock it. That's the best mod I've seen for improving gas mileage.

They say for every 100lbs you removed…you get 3% increases in gas mileage? Maybe that is why my wife’s walk more? Um?

EXACTLY. With a ~100 mile commute to work once per week, I always give myself a 30 minute fudge factor in case I'm late out the door. So long as I'm out the door on time, the extra 25 minutes is irrelevant to me. Other than taking forever, it's actually very relaxing to not be caught up in "the fray". If I'm going 80 mph, I'm always getting stuck behind some left-lane camper, cut off by a semi that needs to go 0.2 mph faster than the one in the adjacent lane, and a whole host of other minor problems caused by inconsiderate, incompetent, and/or inattentive drivers.

Not my cup of tea, but my first thought was that it's a really neat interior, nonetheless!
