I am toying with going from my '17 Tacoma to a new AWD hybrid SUV. Stopped in at my preferred Toyota dealer (wife and I have bought 5 or 6 vehicles from them over the past million years). Thinking about a RAV4, Highlander or Venza; pretty open to any one of them. Just a few new vehicles on the lot, common right now.

Looked at a Venza that checked a lot of boxes. Dealer wanted MSRP + $4K and low-balled me on the trade in value of my Tacoma ($27K). Seemed to disregard my "long term customer" status. Would consider trade in because it compares well with private party sales in high sales tax WA state, which can be a big factor in the overall financing scheme. My Tacoma worth around $31 - 32 in trade in; maybe a couple $K more private sale.

Friend recommended that I hold off for half a year and see if the market reverts to normal. At this time in my 72 year long life, I can finally afford to do almost anything I want. I'm still open to Toyota SUV options, as well as others (Honda, even Hyundai, et al).

I cant find the link/thread (list on TW Thread) but they're some dealers still only charging msrp. Its a terrible time to buy anything. My wife wants a 4runner & or a new RAV4 ughhhhh...

I just went through this. It's unlikely that new vehicle prices will decrease, but you shouldn't have to pay above MSRP unless you live in California. Come down to Oregon and I'll direct you to 2 dealerships that aren't upcharging. (I can't help you with that sales tax, though!)

I wouldn't buy anything is this market unless I had no other possible choice. If you can wait a year you would probably be better off.

Figure out the tax value of it as a trade.

Get a CarMax and Carvana cash in your hand price, subtract the tax value. That's what you actually get for the truck.

I'll bet you come up with a number higher than your 'allowance' from the dealer.

Go back and ask for a down home cash and carry number.

And if the dealer isn't being loyal to you, a multi-repeat customer, with that stupid market adjustment, you've no reason to shop there. Use the internet to at least find an MSRP option.

Sell your Tacoma separately to Carmax or Carvana. Buy the new suv and where ever you go don’t pay a penny over MSRP.

If you're looking to buy and then sell, then we might eventually return to a place wherein dealerships go below MSRP and you should maybe wait. If your plan is to drive it into the ground, considering your financial circumstances, why wait?

I’d consider a Rivian SUV or another electric option. Why carry two power trains??
An EV should meet your needs nicely!

I’m now looking at reserving an EV and selling my wife’s ‘plastic’ BMW… - I used to be a fan, but no longer. - they nickel & dime you (more like dime & Quarter!) and I officially hate working on it. It is designed to discourage any DIY…

electric vehicle maintenance? Wiper replacement, tire rotation, and washer fluid fill.

Will you trade in your Tacoma for the Rivian?

    If I could now, I would…

    - In time…

I’d like to get rid of the wife’s car first.

I’ll enjoy the Taco in the meantime. (Hanging on to the manual gearbox for a bit longer, maybe? )
    :burnrubber:

I saw a Rivian (Truck) in the flesh last week. Even the silly front looks much better in person…

Get a RAV4 hybrid! I think it’s a great option. It’s not a small car but still gets about 40 mpg. And you can still fit a decent amount in the back

No existential crisis. Nothing to gain in responding to sophomoric comments. Small people say small, stupid things.

Otherwise, to most of the rest of you, thanks for your input.

Since you can afford almost anything you want, find a dealer that accepts MSRP and buy what you want. I just bought a new 2022 Tacoma and faced the same dilemma. Should I buy or wait. In January I put a deposit down on a Tacoma based on the build sheet. This Tacoma was manufactured 01/22 and I picked it up end of February.

With the current inflation I would think it is better to buy now than to wait 1-2 years.

Luckily we can still make our own decisions, so hopefully you will make the correct decision for you. Good luck.

In all seriousness here, Toyota is SUPER behind on hybrid orders and so are many others. Especially in the SUV/Crossover department. If you are not tied to Toyota, I'd check out Honda.

And remember, opinions are like assholes, and TW has a fair selection of people that don't wipe.

Any dealer that adds "mark up" $$$ to standard, everyday vehicles can go and eat a #$%& IMO. I would never do business with them, that is shady and just another fancy name for price gouging. My dealer NEVER charges above the MSRP. We are actually looking into trading my wife's 2019 Outback [Subaru] for a Venza. Newer Subaru's reliability and quality are not what they used to be. She is not happy with it and she wants to go back to Toyota
