I have a howl on the 2019 I picked up about a month ago. Has 26k miles on it, wondering if I should take it in and have it looked at.

Mine howled brand new off the lot. I dealt with it for 5000 miles but told them to check it out when I took it in for it's first maintenance appointment. They checked the rear diff oil and said it looked like it had 50k miles on it instead of 5k. I got a new rear differential carrier assembly and now it's so beautifully quiet. The difference is night and day. My invoice says "poor assembly caused pinion bearing to be damaged causing a noise. Also causing debris in fluid."

I had the same thing with mine. The new rear diff was church pew quiet for about 1000 miles and then got louder than the first one. Much louder. My truck had several more issues so I sold it and moved on. TBH, looking back, I think these diffs just tend to be noisy, but not defective. I’ve yet to see one grenade. This really becomes more of a can you live with the noise once you hear it issue? If you can, then enjoy your truck. If you can’t, then either slap on some mud tires or move it. You certainly won’t get hurt with the crazy high resale value. I didn’t. :). Best of luck to you.

So it’s been a couple years since I checked out this thread and posted. I now have ~64,000 miles. Howl started about 1200 miles. It hasn’t gotten any worse and perhaps it’s gotten less noticeable. Truck has been bulletproof with no issues. I was a worry early on but is a total non-issue now for me. Just some feedback if you’re worried about it. I’m not. Awesome truck.

I'm going to have to take the 2020 TRD-OR I just bought two weeks ago in just before the warranty runs out. The howl is kind of annoying but I want to make sure there's enough time to build up the oil glitter to get a new diff if it is eating itself. I appreciate this thread. I didn't even know the whine/howl could be a bug instead of a "feature".

    Hello,

I have a 2019 trd off-road with about 20k miles. I was experiencing the howling sound only when feathering the gas but at various speeds and took it in.

They had the truck all day Saturday and diagnosed it with a rear diff problem, and found pieces of metal. The dealer told me they replaced the entire carrier assembly free of charge.

I was told the new parts are “upgraded” and the tech drove it around experiencing no howl. I just picked up the truck yesterday, I am already experiencing the howling sound again. I have another appointment scheduled for Monday.

Haven’t read through this thread in awhile, but I have 4.88’s in my diff and have already put in 85/140 and though it helped, I still have some whirrling/ howling when I feather the throttle above about 55 mph! Is there anything that has been figured out to at least help in this over the last year! I have 33’s and my whole back of the cab and all the doors are sound deadened, but outside of the stereo, it doesn’t help with the gear whine at all! Anything helps!

Have the dreaded whine between 50-60MPH (23,000 miles) gonna bring it to the dealer. Any language I should use to have them address the problem w/ parts and service? I.e. needs damper and rear diff oil checked for metal flakes? Thanks

Mine has been in twice now. It took pretty much all day each time. They had to drive it around and compare with other models, then sample the differential fluid. Once that was finished the manager had to come and confirm the test results. They found metal shavings the first time, ended up replacing the entire rear assembly.

The second time I went in, the tech heard the noise again. I was told it was a normal noise and no metal shavings were found the second time.

So still not fixed in spite of all that effort? So is this just a fools errand then?

Yes, a fool's errand. I suggest searching all my posts in this thread for my opinion why.

I’m going to attempt plugging the holes in control arms to see if that does anything. Apparently that could be one of the issues due to harmonics.

Since the dealership did not see any traces of metal this time, maybe it’s from the control arms. There are a few other threads around that potential solution.

There is a TSB for this howl.. it's a vibration coming from the rear. They put bushing on the truck bed mounts and sound deadening material behind the rear seats.
