Alrighty. This months extra duties pay went towards a Garrett AT Pro plus Sniper coil and Pro Pointer AT.

Got my headphone issues squared away.

Now I have the issue of having to have an in-line volume control dial on the headphones I use or else they're WAYYYY LOUD in my ears with other style headphones. I have an old gaming headset with the microphone boom on it, that is much more compact than the cheap Garrett headphones I had to use with the device. I might just snip off the microphone to look less weird out in the field.

We are headed to Franconia for a day and I wanted some more meteorite collecting sticks for my wife and daughter. I used @wilcam47 ’s idea for an inexpensive (free!) rare earth magnet source to make them. Simply salvage them from old hard drives! They are easy to separate from the mounting piece in the drive- just use a sharp chisel and pry it off by hand. I made this stick for meteorites with four of them stuck together, a screw, cross piece of wood, crazy glue and a dowel. These would also work well on a prospecting pick blade. They are really strong and can lift this big hunk of heavy hematite:

Ok time to get some bluetooth stuff going. Just wanted to see if these options would work. Trying to keep the cost down.

The transmitter that was suggested I believe:
    https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07198B...NODZ&colid=1E4J1J5EHDAPF&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

    Some low latency ear buds:
    https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B089DB6...colid=1E4J1J5EHDAPF&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1

Not sure if I want over ear headphones. Even in winter here it's not that cold.

Also my buddy has a Minelab WM-08 module he's willing to sell cheap. However, researching that, it seems it's made to pair with the detector and you plug headphones into it. My Vanquish 340 doesn't have built in BT. So these won't work correct?

EDIT: Or I can get this. Same as the earbuds above but comes with it's own transmitter which may work better.

In reading about it on KellyCo's web site, it sounds like it is some sort of "wireless hub" that multiple BT headsets connect to and everyone who is connected to it can all hear each other? Unless I am TOTALLY WRONG, but that is how I read the description?

When it comes to metal detecting, I don't know why one would want to do that?

About "over ear", for me it completely blocks out the environment or close to it. But I guess in certain situations, you wouldn't want that, but one could always, "uncup" one ear just slightly to let some ambient noise in?

See the link below... Maybe you can try something like this?

It's designed to "stream music", so I would HIGHLY imagine the latency is pretty damn low. Which, btw, if your BT device is that frickin slow regarding latency, then they need to be properly shot by a 308 or higher caliber round and put out of your misery. :notsure:

no specs listed on those- probably not low latency for sure. The Giveet set I posted is pretty good and is low latency. Ive used it on both my Garrett VLF and a Minelab PI detector. Only time I had any issue with it was when a buddy fired up a GPZ 7000 about 15-feet from it. But I turned it off and back on again and there was no more interference.

Sad, our trip had to be postponed until later this month- will post about it when we do finally go. :pout: In the meantime I did honey do’s and made a sliding cargo bed box and platform out of scrap plywood for the back of my truck. It works really well and cost pennies to the dollars of one of those decked systems. I’ll post dimensions and plans soon.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hobby level metal detector. Basically I want something to bring camping that will help get my teenage boys out of the trailer more. We just got back from Fort Flagler and my boys expressed an interest when we saw another family with a metal detector.

I'm hoping to find something decent on the $2-300 ish range, but I'm not sure if that is realistic and could spend more if needed to get a decent unit.

I’d look at the Garrett Ace series- maybe the 250 or 300 models. They often come as a set with other tools- also get a pinpointer, that will help keep both busy as one kid detects and the other digs and uses the pinpointer.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend getting a detector that is under $200... $150 absolute lowest. That's just my humble opinion.

I almost got the Bounty Hunter Quick Silver to start with, but I just, BY CHANCE, happen to get a Garrett ACE250.

Other than that, I came really close to getting the Bounty Hunter Quick Silver and that runs about $150.

Another great starter would be the Garrett ACE150, which shares the same coils as the ACE250 & ACE350. I know because I also have the ACE150, which I use from time to time. You can get the ACE150 for about the same price as the Bounty Hunter Quick Silver.

As far as a pinpointer, you can get a cheap one like a Bounty Hunter Pinpointer or similar, but they're fairly fragile compared to say the Garrett Pro Pointer, for example.

@dilbert Also, if you plan on "hunting parks", please watch videos on how to "properly cut a plug when metal detecting". THIS is very important to know how to do!!!

You don't necessarily need to buy a Lesche Digger tool, but get one like a Fiskars that has a good cutting edge.

These 3x items are good starting gear (i.e. metal detector, pinpointer, and digging tool). Well, maybe a 4th "tool"/gear known as a "finds pouch", which can be an old pillow case for that matter although I would recommend something a bit smaller in size, but you get the hint. You just need some sort of "bag" to put your finds in.

Finally, this definitely is NOT a hobby for everyone. People tend to get bored with it very quickly. Expect to be digging up LOTS and LOTS of TRASH as that just comes with the hobby. As you get better, you'll tend to know what is typically a trash target and which is not, but you almost end up digging up everything because you just might skip over something pretty damn cool if you don't!!!

You can get a decent used machine for $250-300. Check craigslist in your area or and MD shops. Stick with the bigger names like Garrett. All you need to start is the detector and a pin pointer and something to dig with to get started.

I purchased one of these new as my starter. I'll be picking it up tomorrow. I went with this one because it is waterproof, I also got a waterproof pinpointer.
Plus, from what I've read, it is easy enough to start with but can be adjusted to different settings and conditions as you get more experience.

Thanks for the tip on properly digging. I'm a backpacker/former boy scout/former scout leader and leave no trace is a priority. I've also noticed that only certain parks allow detecting, and only in specific areas.

Well apparently it's easy to convince me to spend more when I start reading about features.
This seems like a good package and I like the idea of the z-lynk, backlit display, and wireless headphones. Also waterproof so I don't need to worry about putting the rain cover on the display portion (it tends to rain a lot in Washington). Are there issues with counterfeits of these from Amazon? Seems like a great price for everything that is included.
