I'm curious if all of his findings apply to the 3rd gen tacoma.

I found this info for 5100's.

So it looks like the 5100's for the 3rd gen Tacoma are shorter than the King's and Fox's extended travel shocks, so the revelation about the 5100's providing more travel does not appear to apply to the 3rd gen Tacoma.

He doesn't have a Tacoma AFAIK.

 

I know what you're getting at but it has to do with geometry. So just ask him. There's not much of a difference between what he's talking about in a Tacoma. But again he knows more than you or I that's for sure. Ask him.

 

4wheelparts lists different part numbers and different collapsed and extended lengths for the 5100 that fits the FJ cruiser. I don't think everything he said applies to the 3rd gen Tacoma.

I have nothing to prove. I'm just curious about how much of what he said in that video about the FJ cruiser applies to the 3rd gen Tacoma. They are not identical AFAIK.

 

It's actually the description of how a Toyota suspension works is why I find all of his videos informational. I'll reach out to the guy and see what he says.
I know there's a lot of fan boys on here that like to put ginormous lifts and tires and aggressive stances and all that on these trucks and I usually take it all with a grain of salt. These little trucks are not made to be heavily modified like what you see for the overlanding or rock crawler.
It's not that it can't be done it just takes a lot of money and effort and you probably could buy something halfway there for a lot cheaper. Alot of groaning about unthought out after effects. But each is own. It's fun to read and watch what other people are doing.
So back to his videos I think it's great to get a basic understanding of at least a Toyota suspension.

The general theory that Tinkerer lays out in his video should apply to all late model Tacomas, FJ Cruisers, 4Runners, and Hilux. IFS is IFS and there is no magical difference between them where you can steal extra inches.

I don't think anyone should get hung up on the actual specific measurement numerical differences between a Taco and an FJ. They are all going to be a little different in hundreths/tenths of an inch (not full inches) just based on how Toyota engineered them.

That being said:

The real question is what the actual difference between one particular Taco shock and another, and which will cause limitation in your particular configuration first. For example:

Looking at these examples the Fox shocks are a true 1" longer travel. Is it usable before the other components bind up first? Can't say, you have to cycle your own setup and figure it out. Reading other posts should give an idea but no two trucks are the same.

 

I have measured my droop a few times on my truck with king extended length shocks and SPC UCAs and believe I have about 1" of extra travel than stock (upper bound), but it's not a super accurate measurement to use center of hub to fender flare. I've been off by up to 0.5" at times.

 

Well there surely is enough info interest here to go on YouTube and put in the comments that you'd like to see it done with the Tacoma. I just did that a little bit ago so we'll see what happens. I think the more the merrier. The guys an engineer and I think he enjoys the engineering side of the FJ so maybe the Tacoma will spark his interest to compare it to the FJ.

 

I wasn't calling into question all of his findings. I was just curious about the travel/droop findings of the various FJ Cruiser shocks and to a lesser degree the part about the max droop of the factory UCA.

 

I'm skeptical he is going to buy a stock and 5100 shock for a 3rd gen Tacoma and measure them upon my request.

 

I totally understand where you're coming from. I think there's some valid outliers between the FJ and Tacoma. I'd be interested in seeing the differences myself. Sadly yes I'm an engineer as well but not in the automotive world. This kind of stuff makes me realize you learn something new every day.

 

Well if he can find them they'll be worth their weight in gold if he wanted to resell them right?

 

Maybe you can make your own video to compare them? After all it seems to spark your curiosity. You can buy some 5100 shocks and share with all of us here on TacomaWorld! And you can become a YouTube star in the process!

 

Nah my 5100s are on my truck and I ain't gonna play with any of it. I just spec things out and have other people do it.
I like this guy for what he's putting out. I'll ping him about it and see if he won't do it.
