Hello fellow Tacoma World Members and trouble shooters. I am hoping that someone my be able to assist me in determining what the following problem I am having with my Tacoma. You all have always been so knowledgeable and helpful in your past assistance and I thank you for that..

I have a 2017 Tacoma Access Cab TRD Off Road 4X4. I just started to notice the following: When I am driving and need to turn, I am noticing a squeak when I turn the wheel left or right. This sound is very subtle but still there none the less. Also, when the vehicle is stationary and I turn the wheel left or right and with the hood open, I hear a clunk type of noise coming from the engine compartment when I turn the wheel.

I am at a loss as it seems to have something to do, somehow, with the suspension system and not the engine since this clink sound only occurs when I turn the wheel.

Again, I am at a loss so if any of you good folks can offer any suggestions or solutions, I sure would appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi guys and thanks for your replies. No, my Tacoma is stock with no modifications. I have been told by Toyota after servicing one time that the boot on the steering rack was leaking grease...which I did not fix. Could this be causing the clink? I also have noticed that when I turn my wheel left or right, that's when I hear that clink and at the same time the engine revs as if it may be some kind of relay. issue. Very strange.

Your thoughts are appreciated and thanks again.

I'm going with the rack has some junk it in. Might need replaced...might just need new inner tie rods and boots.

It’s possible it’s all related to the steering rack. It’s not unusual for the RPM to raise when turning a slow speeds or stopped. The power steering pump is just that, a pump. It works better when it spins faster. There is usually a sensor that controls this.

However the engine rev too much.
man’s most people don’t even notice.
Well, not until they are looking anyways.

Can you feel it in the steering wheel? Maybe the steering column knuckle needs grease. I woud fix the boot and grease to see if that fixes the problem.

It’s really hard to diagnose based on your description. Most of these weird noise threads end with no resolution. A squeak when turning the wheel could be as simple as a loose belt. There is a belt on the front of the engine that turns the power steering pump and if it is loose it will slip on the pully and make a squeak. It’s quite common and easy to fix.

You could try posting a recording of the sound.

Well I took my Tacoma to a shop who diagnosed the problem as upper control arms on both sides and the new ones do come with the ball joint assembly. The vehicle was making a clunking noise when the wheel was turned all the way left or right. They showed me the upper control arm popping when wheel was turned all the way left or right. It just kinda popped/moved out from its position and the truck even shook a little. All bolts were tight. Seeing the arm move like that and not stay tight was very interesting. My issue is that only after 33,000 miles and a bit of 4 wheelin, the upper and lower control arms failed Those arms should have lasted longer.

The dealer told me that my vehicle was out of warranty and their labor and part prices were much more expensive than my independent shop.

If any of you have thoughts on this diagnosis, one way or the other, please let me know.

Following the repair, I will stay in touch.

Thanks again for your kind interest and replies.

I will keep this tread going. I have replaced the upper control arms with ball joint assemble. The clunk is gone but time will tell. I still have that squeak. Most of all, I would appreciate your comments on the following: I mentioned this in my original tread and still have this issue. When I turn the wheel left or right, with the hood open and the engine running, I hear this click and the engine revs. Perhaps its normal or possibly associated with a power steering pump or relay that is activated when I turn the wheel. What do you all think could be or not be the problem. The forum has more expertise than I do.

Awaiting your response and thanks in advance.
