This is honestly one thing I have always been adamant about not doing.. and I have put the truck through it's paces back in it's lighter days at the drags and Glamis, etc. and I don't really have a reason other than it just never seemed good. Lol. I've always been worried.. but maybe that's what's saved me over the years... Treating it with a little respect. Lol. (although I have dreamt of it)..

I love me some NSX and probably the only 2 seater I'd ever consider owning. My brother's.

Anyone towing an XJ with their taco? or have a recommendation for an appropriate sized trailer? Asking for... potential reasons...

Then aim the intake right over the radiator to give it an OTR "ram" effect.

Switching to a ram air OTR intake on my LS2 was my second biggest power adder with the cam swap out itself being the biggest power adder. The ability to let that thing breathe the way it was supposed to have for a huge bump in power that I was not expecting.

It would be really cool to be able to do it with this truck!

I can't leave anything well enough alone
Thanks for your thoughts. Anyone else have thoughts?

I will never raise the rev limiter, and will also never be under full power at that high of RPM. I want more torque in the regular driving range, 2000 to 4500 or so, don't think I've ever had it over 5k rpms, other than that time it downshifted too far but I let-off the gas immediately...

I see Toyota head gaskets separate, and also head gasket sets, but thinking it might be a whole engine gasket set? With the sales going on, seems like $160 for a whole bunch of gaskets that you may end up needing some day isn't a bad deal compared to $96 for head gaskets only. Aren't there gaskets for timing cover, and obviously valve covers, misc small gaskets for all manner of things that you would need to replace anyway just to get to the actual head gasket?

    https://parts.toyotaofdecatur.com/p...0&ukey_driveline=74549&searchTerm=head gasket

    upload_2022-3-17_20-26-32.jpg

Then there is the Cometic gaskets, made to order 5-6 week delay (maybe they stock a few if I called, but website says made to order) but even when you stay with stock bore 95.5mm, there are a bunch of thicknesses from 0.027" all the way to 0.120", lots in between. Some are 3 layer, some 5 layer, and the thickness would impact compression ratio. What is the thickness of a stock compressed gasket? My assumption is that thicker is better to a point, assuming you aren't milling anything which takes away deck height or chamber volume. the 5 layer gaskets come in 0.060, 0.074, 0.080 thicknesses. For a blown truck, lowering compression, however slight, would be beneficial for more boost but less so for off-boost. Thinking generally that I am not going for max effort in the engine program, but want reliability and torque... would probably go for lower compression for that reason. But I have no idea what the stock gasket thickness is.

I didn't look hard yet, but are the 1GR-FE headbolts re-usable? or are they torque to yield? Are they considered overkill for the job they perform, or are benefits expected from replacement or aftermarket? Are there better ones available from ARP or the like?

Thanks in advance and keep the suggestions and recommendations rolling.

If you have the skill set for the head gasket replacement, it not a bad idea. But if you consider the converse side of the thought process of if you had an high mileage supercharged engine would you consider pulling the supercharger? Most people would say no. Therefore I don’t think it’s out of line to supercharge a high mile engine.
The head gasket replacement would be ideal, but if it delays you too much I would probably go for it anyways. I bought the complete gasket kit when I replacement my blown engine and updated a few main components. It’s complete, that’s for sure. I also have a set of oem head gaskets left over I’d send you if you wanted.
Definitely replace the head studs if you go in there. I would absolutely go arp in a heart beat.

Interested in the gaskets, especially any of the other gaskets I'd be needing for the job. I haven't looked it all up obviously, and I'm sure I will need to know much more before I start, but assume the gaskets related to timing cover, etc. I already have gaskets needed for the blower install like valve cover and manifold, etc.

Do you know of a website or part number for 1GR-FE head bolts from arp or similar? I don't see any on ARP's website. 21 different head bolt/stud kits for Toyota, but 1GR isn't one of them.

I'm rebuilding my engine. So I feel your situation.
These are the bolts I got. There is two shorter bolts on the front of one cylinder head (don't remember witch one right now) just get two new from factory.

They look in stock to me. They usually has have a lead time listed if it is out of stock. I ordered a set a couple weeks back. I would definitely give them a call tomorrow.

No not even. If you replace the blower front section that shoots straight out you can literally aim it and make something that fits right past the radiator.

The only issue with that is that there is still a bend at the rear, but that would be unavoidable.

    If only right?

If you don't need ARP studs such as pushing past 400+ hp, rebuilding the head more than once (reusable), plans to retorque after 500 miles ( I know this was meant for old compressible type gasket but engine builders still go in and check anyway MLS HG), then torque to yield bolts are more than enough. Save yourself $250.

Get a double hexagon 10mm socket to remove Toyota cylinder head bolts. If you proceed with ARP, order the thread chaser as well. Good to have on hand so you don't snap a bolt from not clearing the thread.
