I’ve got an excellent condition 2000 Flare Side Tacoma (base model) with badly sun damaged (hood, top & fender tops) clear coat.

If I was to sell someday would a cheap paint job be worth doing from a purely financial standpoint?

Example would a $500-$600 Maaco job ( I can’t afford a factory $$$$ type job) bring more than the $600 back in profit to the sale price or is it best left alone rather than have a “compromised” paint job?
( remember it’s just a base model but it is excellent condition & low mileage. Thanks)

Get estimates on the resale sale price you may determine the extra work is not necessary. Generally you don’t recoup full price on extras. Although the extras may make it an easier sale.

As a buyer, I would MUCH rather have an original truck than one recently painted by maaco. Their paint jobs suck. A real paint job costs $3-$7k. There's a reason their paint job is only $500.

Depends on how savvy your buyer is.

Either way, you'll have prospects walk away.

Well done (applied) Macco work would impress a lot of buyers if you dump it in the first 3 months after.

More savvy buyers will know early on that it's a 1 yr. expectancy at best.

nope, you better sell it for lower "as is" than with a brand new but cheapo paint job

Better to detail it out and sell as is. Besides, in some circles, “patina” sells … ;)

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Just like any other business with many branches you can not judge the company by one location.

Our local Maaco had a great painter He now opened his own Paint Shop and only does Custom Work.

Though he stated there prep work sucked. What those of us in the know did was our own prep work get a great Paint job very reasonable.

At that time Maaco had the best paint booth in the valley

I agree. As a buyer, I would be worried about what else was covered up. I can always get a paint job myself but I can never see what you painted over. Just my opinion.

The buyer who might best appreciate the true value of that truck won’t appreciate a cheap paint job.

What’s to see ? The paint is shot, it needs a paint job.

……..but the overwhelming consensus is leave it alone. Got it.

Don't go to Maaco. I worked in one but got fired because I took too long sanding the cars.
I was sanding the lower half of the cars after they repeatedly told me not too. Nothing is touched below the beltline.

    OME and worth every penny.
As others have said, do all bodywork/sanding before a Maaco paint job and it's not bad for the money HOWEVER, the same money spent on paint and spraying car yourself (provided you have a clean garage somewhere) gives an even better job.

I paid extra and had the so-called "best" MAACO paint job on my '89 Pick-up and the clear coat started peeling after 3 years - what a sucker I was. Best to let the buyer decide if and how to repaint. Poor condition paint on these old trucks is so common now days, it's almost expected.
