    2017 Tacoma trd v6,
    65000 miles.

yesterday I got a little gas, made it half a mile from gas station and truck starts missing and sputtering. Finally shut off and woukdbt start back. I pushed it to parking spot,
I noticed when pulled gas cap that the gas smelled off- just smelled weak. since I had just got 20 bucks in gas I thought maybe had water or bad gas. So I pulled lines off tank, used blow nozzle to blow gas out of tank and caught in buckets. Sure enough the stuff that came out was cloudy looking- it wasn’t oily, but it just looked cloudy- then while I was watching it drain I saw it stop, and very distinct gas started draining.
I let more drain, and when I was sure I was getting strait faster I finally hooked up lines, went to diff station and got good gasoline ( I checked it) came back and put that in truck.
The truck started, and actually idles on it own now, and I let it idle, tried revving it up to help get any air out, and the trac control light came on, engine light came on, and the engine won’t go over 2300 rpm. I let it run about 30 more minutes to try n burn out any more bad gas, but it didn’t help. This morning when it was cold, it started and ran good for like 2 minutes, then same thing- it idles but soon as you put in drive it almost dies.

is it possible it triggered limp mode or safe mode code and it’s not letting it return to normal?
Or is it maybe it burned up pump or injector or something? Could it be fuel filter? I feel like by now the water or whatever was in gas out to be burned out of fuel system, but maybe not.
I am a diesel mechanic, I’m capable of fixing a good deal of things, I just don’t have a code reader, and the truck won’t run to get to parts house.
Any help here be greatly appreciated

Wow! First, have you contacted the station where you got it? This might require a tow to a stealership for evaluation. I'd be contacting my insurance company as well. Seems pretty clear you were subjected to bad fuel. I don't know if there's anything you can do at this point to DIY diagnose

There is no fuel filter in these trucks. There is a high pressure fuel pump though (much like a CP3) that may still have some water in it.

I would unhook the battery for 10 minutes and try to start the truck again. The codes stored are most likely from the stalling on bad gas. Prob wouldn't hurt to pull the plugs you can get easy access to and look at them...most likely not fouled but always a possibility.

I did not unhook fuel rail, or injectors or anything to try n blow it out. all I did was unhook the supply and return line at the tank, use a rag n blow nozzle n got fuel to drain out the line, what surprises me is how fast after getting gas the truck started messing up-
It was on e- ( gf drove it) and I put 20 bucks in which is only 4-4.5 gal of gas. No sooner than I got on highway it started spitting and sputtering. But I watched and there was maybe 2 gallons of cloudy looking gas come out, the rest was strait gas. I didn’t drive the truck nore than 10 minutes if that before I drained tank.

Water is heavier than gas and the pickup is on the bottom of the tank. Doesn't take long to burn the ~cup of fuel in the lines before the water makes it to the injectors.

If it was me, and i suspected bad gas.

I would start over by draining all the gas out, maybe even drop the tank to get the rest out. Pull the fuel pump out for inspection (Since the tank is down). Then new gas, unplug the battery for a reset. Then try and start. If it is still running like crap then change the plugs too and go from there.

From my understanding that is a debris screen and not a filter element. I have not disassembled one of these sending units to verify but I do not believe water would have any effect on that "filter".

Ok so I’ve ran sea foam thru it- 1 can in 3 gallons of clean gas. Ran truck... I unhooked negative cable, then hooked up, codes cleared. Ran ok for 1 minute then poof starts missing again. I put a code reader on it and it’s got p0305 cylinder 5 misfire
    Po303 cylinder 3 misfire
    Po300 multiple misfires detected
    Po304 cylinder 4 misfire,

the misfire codes for 3 and 5 are marked permanent on code reader. It won’t let me clear those. Others say pending
Not sure what that means. so I think I’m gonna follow advice n go get me a set of plugs, n then pull those first and inspect , maybe replace spark plugs.

    Update-
    Truck is fixed... I hope.
Installed 6 new denso iridium plugs, drove it... it misfired a lot at first but no more codes, I drove to pump and put 5 gal of 93 in it, then drove in interstate, and after 15 minutes or so it’s smooth as silk now.
Also, I had to drive in S mode bc the damn truck tries to take off in 4 gear and lugged it til all old gas was burned out. Now it’s fine.

The old plugs didn’t look that bad, but number 3 and 5 both smelled weird and had greenish film on top of electrode
