I was reinstalling the front diff drain plug and my torque wrench apparently doesn't work. Stripped out the plug and actually started to crush it into the diff. I know this is stupid, I don't need to be told that.
I tried to chisel it out and you can see that didn't work. What advice do people have? I've got 2 options, drill through the center and try an extractor to remove the plug or see if the diff holds fluid and drive it to the mechanic tomorrow. Pictures show the current situation. Needless to say this is the final straw for craftsman tools for me.

Don't blame the tool. Anyone with any experience torquing a nut that tight has to know they are going too tight before it gets to that point.

There are multiple threads here on TW on this problem but I cannot easily locate them. Some have taken the truck to a shop and have had them weld a nut on it. When you finally get this off, many are using a Lexus plus as a replacement. Good luck.

that drain plug tends to seal itself up too, I usually only go maybe a hair past hand tight.

You're right on that. Definitely my mistake. However, I did test the torque wrench after and it doesn't click even when set at 2 lbs.

I'll keep that in mind in the future, I was just following the 48 lb-ft recommended. Still no excuse for my mistake.

Have a shop weld a nut and be done.

It'll hold fluid just fine if you don't have a welder. Take it to a shop. My opinion, that's about your best option.
Like @6 gearT444E said, weld on a nut and zip it out.

We chisel a dent into it directly, then "walk" the dent around.

    I use an air chisel.

Very very very common. Most dealers carry this plug.

My buddy who can weld couldn't help until tomorrow. So another buddy suggested using a pipe nipple extractor. Success!

Agree. I never use a torque wrench on drain plugs.

OP, I feel ya with the Crapsman quality.
All of my remaining Crapsman toolbox inventory is open game to be cut, ground, shaped, welded and turned into one off tools that I only need to work once for a specific task.

I stopped trusting Crapsman tools 20+ years ago.

Glad you were able to get the diff plug out.

You must use a torch along with the chisel, heat, chisel, heat, chisel…. Otherwise you’re wasting your time.
Been there and done this, pain in the butt.
    Try again with heat.
I was pounding with all my strength and nearly gave up but that SOB finally snapped off.

    Edit:
Late to the party, glad you got it off.

If you need a quality but affordable torque wrench pick up a Tekton.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Now I gotta wait until the dealer is open tomorrow to get a new plug.

If I were you I’d get your buddy to weld a nut on it tomorrow. You’ll never have to worry about it again. And he’ll have easy access to make a good solid weld.

    We all make mistakes

I call them Life Lessons (and I've lost count of mine)

Excellent advise above, have a shop remove it for you and change to Lexus plug (you know THE ONE TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE INSTALLED FROM THE FACTORY)
