Ok, gonna jump in here - I answered a similar question for someone else in a thread here.
I have had an SR5, have an OR, but run Sport suspension.
1st - yes, the springs are an essential part of the equation (they are unique to each, even L/R)(not leafs).
SR/SR5 are a rather general purpose shock built for road/lifespan.
TRD Sport - are a compromise from OffRoad and road ability.
TRD OffRoad - are soft and fluffy like an old luxury car. They are great except when on road. They nosedive and have body roll.
TRD Pro - a refined version of the OffRoad that is likely the best street/trail without going into aftermarket offerings.

PERSONALLY, I changed my OffRoad suspension to Sport because the OffRoad was too fluffy on-road for me and what was my highway queen. The Sport cleaned that up. It does potholes and speed bumps fair, but the OffRoad would be better. The compromise is body roll and nosedive.
    I expect I’ll move aftermarket next, but that’s likely 40K away…

Curious how KYB shocks would work in these tacoma's. I thought they performed well in my gen1 tundra better than the bilsteins in the same vehicle.

Thanks for all the info already.
I'm looking to do this same swap due to the road quality and terrain in our area. Are there any other considerations to keep in mind? Such as the u-joints or any other parts?
I've replaced shocks and struts before but never upgraded a vehicle or added a lift. I'm looking at a set of front coil overs w/3in spacers and rear leaf w/2in spacers. 20k on the set.
