Silica is very bad for your lungs.
The crystalline microscopic particles (dust) are sharp and hard and cause scarring of the lungs.
Prolonged exposure leads to Silicosis.

Story Time With Gritto

After graduating high school, I got a job at the Pfaltgraff plant in Aspers, PA.
They make stoneware...you might have heard of them.
(I wasn't ready yet to go to college).

So they made me a kiln operator.
Had a control room and everything, but also had to load and unload the cars.
It was a continuous firing kiln over a hundred feet long.
You put loaded cars in one end and pushed them through at a continuous rate, monitoring firing temperature.
Then took cars out the other end, let them cool down, and unloaded.

Did that for a year, but that's all bye-the-bye.
They were sorry to see me go to college the following year and told me I'd have a job for the asking.
So after my first year at school, I took them up on it for a summer job.

This job was in the mixing room.
I operated the pug mill.
A buddy (also a college student on summer break) fed the mixers.
Big two story hunks of machinery with elevators to lift the mix components.
The mix components were in 60-80 lb bags.

I forget now all the components, and some had names on the bags that gave no clue as to what they contained.
To this day I dunno what "Old Mill" was.
For others, the markings made it plain what they were.
Like nepheline syenite (a silica-undersaturated feldspathoid)...look it up if you want... not that it will mean much if you slacked high school chemistry.
Or kaolin (as in kaopectate). You know what that does.

We had a running joke about "cuttin one off" if we had to go take a crap.
"Don't forget to take a knife with you."

Anyway, where was I?

Oh yeah, there was some other stuff that went into the mixer, but I forget now.
My job was to monitor moisture content, mix and dump the stuff onto a conveyor, and extrude big slugs of it from the pug mill.
Then cut the slugs into slices on a wire cutting table, and wheel a load to the forming machines (plate machine, bowl machine, etc).

We had what we called Pig Snout rubber masks with replaceable filters.
Even in those pre-OSHA days they were very insistent that we wear them.

Cuz Silicosis.

Aspers huh? I used to deliver to Motts there and always wondered where the fuck they found employees to work there. That place is in the middle of nowhere.
