I am removing both catalytic converters, replacing with pipe. I'm a retired UA Steamfitter local26. She has 388,000 miles on her. Don't have to go through DEQ. It wants to breathe. I have been told a earlier brain module for 2.7L 4 cylinder will allow her to start. Please help?
I have replaced both cat's once. I will not afford them again. Truck isn't worth that $$$$. Again, help Tacoma brothers!

yet useful but on a real note a helpful take is to move out of California unfortunately but also to just put a cat back on

It should still run without cats. It will throw a P0420 code/check engine light, sound awful and smell like crap...but that's another matter.

URD used to sell o2 simulators that would trick the ECU into thinking the o2 sensor is satisfied by the catalyst so you don't get any codes. But they pulled it off their website a year or two ago.

I've heard there's some way you can use spark plug foulers to do the same thing but I'm not familiar with it, someone on here probably is.

    Welcome to TacomaWorld
What @eon_blue said with the exception of clogged cats not just cats operating below minimum efficiency.
If the cats aren't clogged mounting the downstream sensor (BIS2) In a spark plug extension threaded into a universal threaded type O2 flange keeps the P0420 code from tripping the CEL.

I just saw someone said it doesn’t need to pass emissions. In that case just make sure you leave the o2 sensors where they need to be and ignore the check engine light on the dash it will still run fine.
