I am moving to Alaska in a couple of weeks (worst time to move) and I need advice on what tires I should get. What I am looking for is the best tire that will do fine on the highway, in the snow, and occasionally on the trail.

In a perfect world I would have a set of tires for the winter, and another all terrain set. My concern is that any A/T tire I get will get too worn on the highway on the trip up there. Any advice will help!

    I drive a 2008 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Sport.

I run the Cooper St Maxx. Had them siped and have had no problems with them. It's been pretty slick up here as well due to the temps warming up and then cooling off at night, freezing the roads up. Welcome to Alaska!

thanks for the recommendations. For the Alaskans, what is your take on the safety of pulling a trailer in the current road conditions? Any suggestions?

Go slow and don't push the truck. You'll get a feel for the ice on the roads and it'll get easier as you drive and get more comfortable with the roads. It's hard to predict what the roads are going to be like in a couple weeks. Could be clear and dry.... Or it could be a complete white out and snow on the roads. Either way, my best advice is to take your time and don't rush.

Are you currently running these? I am thinking I might want to give them a try, but the Cooper Discoverer M+S are only $107 a piece at discount.

No, but I've done a lot of research and I'm planning on putting a set on my work van. If the boss won't get the ATW, the Discoverer M+S will be the go to.

New member here, also moving to Alaska in a few weeks (best time to move there!). What tires did you get? How did they work out?

Gonna drive from East Coast to Anchorage and store truck as I’ll be *remote* (no road access) but I’ll be back to truck off weeks for driving and outdoor exploration. Dealership wanted to sell me Goodyear Nito Terra or Wrangler Duratrac. Cooper price is better and … it’s a family name. How’d everyone’s Cooper tires work out in AK?
