Greetings fellas - I have a 21 SR dc shortbed 4x4. Picked this up earlier last summer after my 07 4runner v8 was totaled.

I am planning on taking a 2 month road trip soon - and am starting to figure out what additional gear I’ll need. I have a roofnest hard shell rtt - it’s the big boy so it measures out around 7’ long.

I don’t really want to mount it on a rack that’s above the roof due to the wind resistance that always kinda freaked me out on my 4Runner.

wondering if you had suggestions for mounting it to hang off the back of the bed or if I should just bite the bullet and have it mounted above the roofline..

pics of other builds would be appreciated.

I’m aware this question has already been beaten to death, but couldn’t really find something similar to my predicament

    appreciate the help

I have a iKamper Skycamp Mini mounted over my bed at/below the roof line. The Mini is shorter than your Roofnest so it fits rather nicely.

I used Mobtown Offroad's bed bars to mount it (they have since gone out of business) but there are other companies that make low-profile bed bars as well.

My truck has an Ironman4x4 FCP suspension (about a 2.25" lift), but other than that it is stock.

I get between 19 and 21 mpg on the freeway with this set up and couldn't be happier.

Yep get a shorter rtt is just about the only thing you want to do. Or chance it and mount it on your bed and let it protrude 2ft

I have a iKamper mini mounted on a DIY Rhino Rack cross bar track system on my bed rails. I love it because the RTT sits below the top of the cab out of the air stream, and I can quick mount & dismount the rack in less than 5 minutes. The tracks work with a Bakflip type tonneau cover too.

I got all the info on how to do it from this thread.
