I bought a copy of CS5 about 10 years ago.

My new PC is arriving today, and I'm worried it won't load on a new PC since Adobe only rents PS now.

I do have the CD, box and all the paperwork...serial number and key.

I know it's and antique program now days, but it still does everything I need.

Anyone have a clue if it will install?

I could have written the same post a while back. Bought CS5 and it worked for years without an issue. Then Windows 10 came out and it was flakey, but I could make it work. Then I bought a new laptop and the video drivers were unusable. I finally gave up and started paying Adobe their fuckin subscription money. There are other options, but everyone I work with uses the Adobe suite. There are some fights I know I won't win so I never start them. Moving the others would be one of those fights. That said I'd give it a try, the worst thing that will happen is it won't work.

Unfortunately SaaS (software as a service) is here to stay. If you want to go with a competitor that is not in the SaaS business you should look up Affinity Photo (Photoshop competitor) and Affinify Design (Illustrator competitor). Many of the tools are similar although I will say, if you are used to Adobe products it is a step down. The Affinity team is constantly updating the products and you only pay one time for a license, they just don't have the decades of experience and releases in their products.

You can get affinity photo for windows for $54.99. Worth a look.

Alternatively, if you are tech savvy you could spin up a VM on your local machine or in the cloud and run an OS that has all of the drivers that will work with CS5.5 but then if you are running a VM in the cloud on AWS or Azure is the overhead and costs associated with the virtual machine worth it? Why not just get a CC plan instead?

    PC didn't come today...thanks UPS!

My first copy of Photoshop came on 13 floppy disk, obviously been using it a long time.

I did check out Affinity and it looks nice, but I'm too old and use to PS, I'd hate to lean a new system.

I've been using CS5 on Win 10 for a lot of years with zero problems. The PC I bought says Win 10, sure as fuck hope it ain't 11. I bought a laptop a couple weeks ago with 11 on it. It's more like using a cell phone or tablet than using a PC.

I guess I got lucky CS5 loaded and I tried it a few times with no problems.

Just hope nothing happens down the road.

I forgot how damn long it take to set up a new PC from scratch. Shit tons of files and programs to load from a portable hard drive.

Anyone know a good Windows based option that's not so pricey to run Photoshop? I currently have a Chromebook and I know that it won't work...plus I can't figure out the ram and all that crap on this thing.

This article may help. With a Chromebook I would be concerned with performance. Those machines are made to be basic, bare-bones computers that leverage the internet. It looks like the most highly recommended photo editor for Chromebook, Pixlr, is exactly that. A photo editor that leverages the servers horsepower rather than your chrome book.
