The microscopic metal particulate *is* there but that's why the filter is there also.

But you also kinda further my point, thanks to said filter there's, generally, not enough metal to bother with a magnetic drain plug.

If you've never pulled your diff or transfer case plug do so and report back to how fuzzy it is, then consider that there's a *LOT* more moving parts in an engine.

Just for my education I had Googled magnetic oil plug and seems it’s best for capturing the smaller particles that the filter media doesn’t, some pictures showing the material that it caught. Not a lot just very fine material, the kind that adds wear to the engine. Everyone can do their own research and decide for themselves if it’s worth doing.
