this might sound ghetto but anyone think of making some boards themselves? the price on these quality recovery boards are pretty dam steep tho im sure they are worth it.

i wonder how well some tire tred attatched to plywood would work.. could stud it out for more traction?

Good to know, Im going to reach out to them at some point to get a 2nd set of ladder mounts so I can go either the drivers side or the back depending on how Im camped.

I did have to tighten my latches down a bit to get a complete seal on the bulb gasket. Do you have any idea what the rubber gasket / filler strip looking stuff is for? The stuff that was shipped inside the tent?

    A bunch of junk

They told me they insert into the cross bars that mount atop it. I have not mounted them and likely wont

there is a point tho.. i had a huge motorhome and tho it was nice and comfy i didnt enjoy my time as much as "roughing it" she would rather glamp then camp tho.

im now at the age where i want to be somewhere in the middle. rough it but have some things that make camp life easier like power banks for coffee and awnings and outdoor kitchen setups.

my biggest issue with getting my wife in a truck set up over a motorhome is bathroom situations.

The Yoho has one of them Dometic Portable toilets, but haven't used it yet. Should be a big improvement over the home depot bucket!!

Somewhere in the middle is where we've found we want to be. But this also lets us stealth camp easily for cross country trips. Was great pulling into a rest area, hitting the restroom, then hitting the hay all in less than 10 minutes. And will still be great for random camping spots on the sand dunes, in the desert, or up off a forest service road. :)

People use tree limbs and pieces of old carpet. Does it work as well, or as easily? probably not, but it might be enough in a pinch! The tire tread and plywood would probably work fine in some situations, but often I bet they'd break. There have been many times my boards have curved/bent a ton while ramping outta a hole I had dug with my tires (in the sand). Quality boards will bend right back like nothing happened, cheap boards often permanently deform or sometimes even snap. It comes down to how often you plan on using them. buying a $100 cheap set will definitely save you a minimum of 1 time, which is great. If they break, buy another set. But for me, I've used mine time and time again. I drive on the Oregon Sand Dunes and have had to pull them out multiple times in a 15 minute period (towing a car trailer across the dunes with a Tacoma can be exciting).

I've thought about this too. I had good results using ~2'x4' pieces of regular unmodified plywood under the tires of a stuck 15' u-haul van in the snow. Fully loaded with all my junk.
Granted it was on my flat driveway (probably should have shoveled first :anonymous:), but I got I sunk it into 6+ inches of soft stuff after driving off a ledge of hard-packed snow/ice. Trying to dig it out got me nowhere, as the van simply would not climb up those few inches of snow/ice to get back on top. Stuck the plywood in front of the tires and it drove right out.

On a steep incline I'm sure additional traction would be needed on the surface of the plywood.

But I also recall seeing a youtube video where they tried making their own traction boards from 2x10s. One set had grooves cut across the width and one set had bolts through to mimic the knobs on maxtrax. They got good and stuck in some mud, and the wood traction boards did nothing to help them get out.

I love the set up & they’ve been great for me. I’ll admit, they are deceptively heavy and a bit cumbersome to transport / store. I’ve been carrying them in a canvas bag. I picked mine up on sale for $99 from Sierra, but they don’t have them in stock any longer.

I have the cheap xbull boards I bought a couple years ago for $56 delivered. I've only used them for leveling the truck when camping and don't off road enough to warrant spending $300 on boards. At the price I paid they will pay for themselves the first time I use them. I definitely would spend on the quality boards if I was off road more often.

    Just the basics
Here you go. Just today I found a new place to stow them for easy access when getting to camp as leveling the truck is one of the first things I do.

Thanks. Looking into whether they will be ok to use on the front tires of my Winnebago Minnie Winnie 22r? Amazon listing says "4,000lbs/RV"

No where near the setups you guys have but it was so good to take the truck and the girl and the dog out for a weekend camp trip. Now I have the itch for a RTT....

Tent camping is tops. Add an awning for shade or rain. Wind is a whole another thing.

Best is the sunsets over an open fire!

I highly recommend a clamshell tent. I wish I'd done that from the start! You'll just need a tall enough bed rack to clear the roof. I use the ovs mamba

Cool thread. The first pic is the original set up and the second one is the set up we have now but we are going to be selling the little trailer soon and possibly buying an A frame type camper.
