I used a 16” piece of railroad rail for a anvil. Small, heavy, lots of angles.
The noise I generated from it was annoying as hell. The vice I had was the only
Old one left in the shop. Had the same one since the 90’s.Every other one was new..
like you said using them with 5lb sledgehammer and 4 feet of pipe to tighten
things is not how to keep them happy

At one of my way back jobs (I was a lot younger :pout:) we had a massive vise probably 3-4 times as big as the one I posted. Bored people were always opening the damn thing all the way up just to see how far it would open, naturally when you wanted to use it you needed to crank it shut about 327 turns...

Due to the type of process the longer you were down the exponentially more work it was to get running so machine stops were handled Nascar pit crew fast.

I rushed up the vise -- which again some dumb@$$ had opened full -- and begin spinning the handle closed (clockwise) for all I was worth. It was mounted on the left corner of a workbench and I was standing to the left of the vise.

About turn #243 I had the well oiled handle turning with a good rhythm when a co-worker arrived at the other side of the vise and asked a question, I stepped a bit closer to hear him and ---

    WHAP!

The steel end about the size of a golf ball of the 18" spinning handle did a neat uppercut to my ---

Well, I crumpled to the floor and my co-worker doubled over with laughter . (the bastard!)

Pain in the shop of men Always seem to bring out laughter. Once blood flows it’s a little different.

    Very much so.

The worst is when the kids accidentally get you. You can't really tell them why play time suddenly turned into daddy groaning in agony on the floor.
