Tips for achieving high MPG in 3rd Gen OR?

Only going to get worse once we hit $6 a gallon or like Europe closer to $9-$10 a gallon.

 

Do you drive 90 mph everywhere?

Im at 30,000 miles and average 21 mpg easy.

 

I never understood this with cruise, why does it need to go full throttle to go from 65 mph to 70 mph.... I dont care how long it takes me to get to 70mph, just get there eventually without burning half a gallon of fuel.

 

Make sure that your tires are properly inflated as well. One of the easiest things to change that can have an affect on MPG.

 

I was hoping someone would post this so I did not need to. You can learn good MPG habits from that screen.

Nope. 65-70mph. 34" tires. 3" lift. About 500lbs of armor.

 

Lol you are not kidding man my cruise control uses the throttle like a pissed off teenager. 1mph below the set speed and it'll drop 2 gears and hit 5500 RPM for 30 seconds for absolutely no reason

 

ive noticed somethings written on the internet are not true.

 

For me, getting over 20 mpg means letting the truck "do its thing". Similar to a bicycle whose gears you shift to maintain a steady effort. That is, maintaining steady throttle and letting it slow down a little (62-63 mph) on inclines. Best tank so far = 21.5 mpg.

 

Have my doubts about this approach.

if I try to take off slow my mpg bar will drop to about 10 mpg and take about 15 seconds to get up to speed all the while staying around the 10 mpg with light throttle. Or if I get going faster more peddle then I hit about 8mpg for a short time then back off the throttle and cruise at 25 or so mpg. These trucks seem to take a lot of time to reach speed when using a light throttle. Then on the highway I noticed I can cruise at just about 60-65 and light throttle and be at 30 mpg until I hit a slight hill then I feather the throttle not to drop below 60 mph which is the speed limit and it will hover around the 20 mpg line but sometimes it will down shift then mpgs drop. I have been able to get my average mpgs to 23 today but my the time I got home I was at 22.6 because of some off highway driving with stop lights. I will be happy with anything over 20mpg and it seems pretty doable if it’s mostly highway miles and mostly flattish for sure. It’s actually fun trying to get the most mpgs out of this truck.

 

Personally, don’t care what I get. But I say that sitting at less than 5,000 miles in a year and a half.

 

Ok . So think of it like this. Heavy truck light throttle to get heavy truck moving. What do you think the amount of HP and TQ you have at that low RPM? You need to use the power of the engine to get the heavy truck moving then it’s easy to keep it moving. I used to drive. 99 dodge 4x4 diesel long bed extra cab. Big ass heavy truck. It was a turbo diesel. If I granny drive it I would get 17-18 mpgs but if I hit the throttle and let the turbo and TQ of the engine get me moving then cruise I was getting 20-21 mpg.
You by all means don’t have to believe me that’s fine. I will continue to drive like I do and get 20+ mpgs .

 

I believe in "Trust, but verify." Which I will do on the next tank of fuel after the 15¢/gallon tax credit kicks in tomorrow here in CT. Once the following fill-up comes I'll report back.

 

Trucks get truck milage, cars get car milage. Trucks are bigger and heavier.

 

In my younger days, I always had a muscle car and a motorcycle. Lately, when my Wife sends me on errands I drive her Corolla (which gets about double the MPG of my Tacoma). I realize many people are not able to have multiple vehicles available, but this option has worked for me over the years.

 

Drive like a grandpa. I'm not old but one head on, almost life ending wreck will change your way of thinking and driving.

I just chalked it up to the torque converter getting to full lock sooner and consequently staying locked up longer.

15000 miles per year…

@20mpg = 750 gallons x $4.00/gal = $3000 fuel expense per year

@15mpg = 1000 gallons x $4.00/gal. = $4000 fuel expense per year

…so for every mpg you save $200 dollars per year when driving 15,000 miles.

those beefy tires? costing you 2mpg or $400 a year.
that stupid roof rack? another 2mpg or $400 a year.
the armor? prob another 1-2mpg or…… $400 a year.
remove wind dam… thats 1mpg there… $200 a year.
the price gouged tune? yep 1mpg lost…$200 a year.
A roof tent or other miscellaneous weight? FUCKED!

when gas hits $6/gallon, truck worth will dive 20%, absolute worst time to buy a truck is now.
