My insurance covers the robbery of cats so I'm gonna go ahead and skip this upgrade. Of course it cant hurt to have but my fear is that a person who's equipped with an angle grinder etc to rob these, will also have several other tools to remove the cat protector.

The scumbags who steal cats are lazier than the avg person, otherwise they'd find gainful employment.
Being lazy means that they steal the most low hanging fruit, and even a slight obstacle will cause them to move on.

Just ordered the Talon setup. My truck will sit on boat ramps overnight too often, next to a Sam Rayburn neighborhood that has been taken over by backwoods Billy Greenteeth-types on meth. They only come out at night. I'd love to have a timber rattler to tie up underneath there like the VC use to do in their tunnels. I have a set of cats off my '09 G8-GT sitting on the shelf out in the shop. The American Racing long tube headers I ordered gave me the option to delete cats and go with only axle-backs...so I did! I wonder how much they are worth now? Probably more than the Talon shield cost.

I think copper thieves are going to start hitting electric cars at some point. At lest you can still drive away after a stolen cat.

    none yet
But to strip the the copper they will need to take the whole car and strip it in a chop shop to get all the wiring out and the motor windings
not the 30 sec and dash that a cat is

No one is messing with Edie's cat.

Man I'm not to worried about my Taco cats too much at home, but I've got a couple of long trips planed and all of these threads got me thinking how much it would suck to deal with this shit out on the road. Guess I'll be looking into one of these skid plate guard things soon.

I ordered the Talons plate for my 21 SR5, and it was at my house 4 days later.
Watched one of the YouTube dudes who show the installation and I had it on in about 20 minutes.
They are very well thought out and much heavier construction than I figured they would be.
It came with all the hardware needed.
Great folks to deal with by the way.

Anyone know of any Toyota-approved offerings for an install package using one of these aftermarket cat covers?

Catalytic converters get extremely hot (1200-1600F according to one article) and I wonder if installing one of these aftermarket covers (since they'd block so much airflow and cooling path) gives Toyota's lawyers a way to reject various warranty claims if you have certain ones of these installed.

I think Toyota actually partners with miller cat shield to offer cat shield for Sequoias as dealer addons, but I'm curious too about the restricted cooling on cat and such effects, if I have to put money on it, I bet the difference is negligible because cats are tucked in and not directly in the path of airflow

ev cars have motors on each axle, with a 4x4 truck you could just hop under, cut the leads to the motors and make off with the copper.

I don't know the specs on EV cars but a lot of motors today are copper clad aluminum wire, not pure copper. Worth a LOT less. I'm sure 4 motors off an EV would be quite heavy and still worth a few dollars, maybe $20 total if CCA?

But being that heavy I don't think anyone is "running" off with 4 EV motors lol tossing in the back of another vehicle? Sure, worth the effort and risk? I wouldn't risk it, but I'm definitely not in the same mindset as someone stealing cats. But cats would be more effective in the cost/weight to payoff ratio.

You may be right about a negligible difference since the Tacoma cats are in an odd place compared to many vehicles, but it also seems possible the location works against it, in that the cat shield could reflect heat back into the engine compartment and increase the overall temperature there, and in turn everything in the engine compartment. It seems like just the sort of ambiguity that corporate lawyers looking to reduce any possible future liability for Toyota might want to write new legal liability language about. But if Toyota has partnered with Miller for dealer installs of their product, that's probably a good sign that the corporate lawyers have looked into it.

I can’t say what an individual Toyota dealer will do, but I can say I have had a few dealers order my plates for new trucks.

I can also say I have had reported of people checking their trans and engine temps and them being within 1-2 degrees before the cat plate was installed.

Just thought I would throw an update on this to provide another solution for those that are looking. I wanted to get full RCI skids for my 2022 OR, they now offer a "Catalytic Guard" (started about a month ago) that you can add to your existing RCI Transmission skid plate or part of a new install. I happened to be in CO and got the exhaust reroute done (A A Performance Muffler & Brakes in Englewood, CO) and had the great guys @RCI-Offroad do a full install for me. If you have the RCI skids already or are thinking about them you now have protection for the catalytic converters.

I installed my Cat Security last weekend in around 70 minutes laying on my back in the driveway. Way I see it is if they steal my cats I put in an insurance claim and they cover it. My rates go up, I’m out of pocket for a rental car for a few days and I’m still not guaranteed the tweekers won’t try again. So $300 and 70 minutes of my life is money well spent knowing the a-hole will just hit the three other trucks on my end of the block. Plus, the aluminum adds at least 20 horsepower!
