    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

    I did stuff like that when I was young and vehicles didn't have computers -- it was a lot of work on those simpler old vehicles.

    If you have an identical but 4x4 parts vehicle sitting right next to you in the shop you can do it and it is just a lot of work. Always easier and ultimately better to just buy a 4x4 if you want one.

    Your pre-runner looks nice and clean, it should sell for a good price.

    Welcome :hattip:

    Use the SEARCH feature of the forum. Lotsa info. Most will say don’t do it. I’m one of them but that’s just from what I’ve read over the years.

    Good Luck with whatever you decide.

    We dont know anything about your skills, workspace, tool collection, ability to find a donor vehicle, the condition of your current vehicle, your time frame or your budget.

    Without that, advice offered is pretty much a WAG.

    Can it be done? Absolutely.

    Can you do it? :notsure:

    Skip the 4wd ifs and go straight to the ifs elimination setup :thumbsup:

    Prerunner owners ---> ifs 4wd
    ifs 4wd owners ------------> ifs elimination

    Id have to agree i don't think its a worth the time cost and effort to swap it to a 4WD. If the truck has a sentimental meaning for you then maybe try the conversion. TBH i have 4wd and have yet to have to use it :/

    I always view this question in the same manner as trying to sneak a peek at a price tag at any store on Rodeo Drive.

    ... If you have to ask, it's not for you.

    Welcome to Tacoma world. I have done it with some parts from the local scrap yard. It’s doable. I thought about buying and 4wd swapping trucks. I don’t know if there is enough money in it to swap it and sell it so I haven’t.

    Search around the 1st gen section, ignore what the 2nd and 3rd gen people say. It’s doable on a 1st gen and people do actually do it. If you can do the work yourself, it’s pretty straightforward.

    good luck!
