I just bought a 1998 Tacoma standard cab 4 x 4 five speed from a used car lot for $4800. Truck has 285,000 miles on it. Interior is very good. Truck runs strong idle smoothly with no weird wines 6691D3F7-4B3E-4D2E-B0D6-70E28D68FBDC.jpg 685480CC-51B5-44D8-9652-A75303764232.jpg BA6D5A72-8AD1-4F58-8DE4-DDBF1D7B6E22.jpg 964DF4EA-F314-4EBF-87CC-9A177DDE1BB5.jpg or noises. car lot owner confesses to doing some undercoating and welding on the frame in some areas. Parking brake doesn’t work. Cable snapped. No rear cable section at all. Air cleaner filthy, oil looks good. Alternator and battery needs replacing. Some rust around the upper portion of the window frame/seal. I brought her home. Going to show her some love and drive her daily. I’ll post some pics and answer any questions that I can and hopefully document the progress on here. I’m 50 years old and haven’t had the need to work on any vehicles in the past 10 years. I needed a second vehicle and found my heart wanted this one. I’m learning A lot and just reading through some of the threads on the forum. I still have questions hopefully some honest hearts can reciprocate with some truth. I’m looking forward. I welcome comments and Critiques.

by the way….what are these units and their purpose? I’m not familiar. Thanks. (Under vehicle pics) my video would not upload for some reason. ‍♂️

The rod going from differential to valve on left frame side is a LSBPV
Load sensing brake proportioning valve and actuator rod. Truck has had lift done properly as the rod differential mount has been raised.
Keep the frame coated inside and out with corrosion prevention.

And lube all zerks on Ujoints at oil changes.

    Greetings!
Nice truck!, I got my 96 V6 5 speed about the same mileage as yours (268,000 if memory serves.)

I'm rocking 383,000 now, and I don't baby the truck, by any means. But I vigorously maintain it, and I have definitely spent more than a little bit of money doing that but also, all major parts of my truck have had zero issues, differentials, transmission, transfer case, engine top or bottom, no problems. Just keep it oiled and make sure any issues that come up with overheating are remedied quickly.

This forum is extremely helpful and I have solved many a problems through some of the wise and kind help from the people around here!
