I picked up my 2022 offroad tacoma on Friday in Missouri and drove it back to Texas where I live. The dealership didn’t have anyway to process out of state registration so I got a bill of sell and the Toyota title and was told it came with a 50 state inspection. I get home and see nothing in my paperwork about an inspection. The window sticker does list 50 state inspection and so does Toyota website but looking at Texas dmv it’s not really clear. It says you must have inspection done before coming. That’s what I’m use to doing on my other cars, go get inspection and bring paper with you as proof. I don’t wanna get an unnecessary inspection if I don’t have to, also the new cars in Texas are usually good for 2 years when purchasing from Texas dealer.

for $18.50 or less depending where you live, not a total loss.

I’m not too sure for out of state stuff though.

A vehicle must be titled in your name within 30 days of the date of sale to avoid delinquent transfer penalties. Additionally, you must register the vehicle within 30 days of bringing the vehicle to Texas, and the vehicle must pass a Texas inspection before it can be registered. After having it inspected, take the following to your county tax office to title and register the vehicle:

    • Proof of Inspection (Vehicle Inspection Report)
    • Proof of liability insurance meeting State of Texas minimum requirements
    • The vehicle's odometer reading if it is required
    • An original out of state title or other valid ownership evidence
    • Proof of sales tax payment or current foreign/military ownership document
    • Completed Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U)
    • The following fees:
      • Registration fee (base fee of $50.75 for passenger vehicles and light trucks),
      • Title application fee of $28 or $33, depending on the county,
      • State portion of the vehicle inspection fee (up to $30.75)
      • Local county fees (up to $31.50)
      • 6.25% vehicle sales tax,
      • $1 Insurance verification fee
      • $4.75 processing and handling fee

Ya I read that as well, but dealer told me it comes with the 50 states inspection and didn’t explain what they do to get a 2 year inspection being that it’s new. I get different answers everytime I ask the DMV. Seems kinda dumb, imo, to have a brand new vehicle inspected when the government already requires them to meet their standards. Inspections aren’t that much so I don’t mind getting one but seems redundant.

Does the truck have an inspection sticker from Missouri? If not, then they didn't do it. Also, check your paperwork and find out if you paid for TTL; emphasis on the L (License).

I just bought a truck in Oklahoma. I had to get a inspection done which is only for 1 year $7.50. I took that paperwork, waited for the title from Oklahoma to come in, and dealership paperwork showing price for the vehicle and how much my trade in value was so I didn't have to pay state taxes on the difference. Took all that to the dmv and paid the taxes for title to be transferred to Texas

In Texas a new vehicle inspection is only good for 2 years if the vehicle is purchased in Texas and then has to be renewed yearly after that.

“50 State Inspection” on the window sticker means it is built to pass inspection in all 50 states NOT that your particular vehicle get an inspection sticker in your state..

Every state is different. Know your state laws.

Some dealers will offer a sticker when you b

I don't think Missouri does inspections on new vehicles anymore. A Missouri inspection wouldn't do you any good in Texas even if they had done one. If Texas requires them for new vehicles, you'll just have to get one. But it should be quick as I can't imagine they would pull a wheel. Probably just check your lights, call it good, and take your money for a sticker.

This is basically a word of warning to anyone going to another state to buy a vehicle. Check with your LOCAL DMV either in person or on their website before buying the vehicle out of state. You may find that it is just not worth what savings you may come up with for buying the vehicle out of state. Believe me, I very much considered doing that, when I bought mine. Sales tax here in northern CA at that time, was 9.75% [it is now 10.75%!] and so, on my over $30,000 truck, the sales tax alone was over $3000! I considered going back across the country to my home state, and buying it there, at a sales tax rate of only 3%, saving $2000. But of course the cost of then driving it back across the country, with gas hotels, etc, pretty much equaled it out, and also, then having to do things that would not have to be done on a new vehicle bought here, was another hassle. Also, and this is in CA, but if you drive to another state and buy that new vehicle to save on sales tax, when you then bring it back into CA to register it, unless you have had the vehicle for over 6 months, you will then have to pay the difference in sales tax that you paid in the other state, and what CA would charge, or they would just charge you the sales tax you should have paid, and then you would have to file a state tax return in the state you bought the vehicle in, just to get your sales tax paid back. In other words, another hassle. Bottom line is to check local laws/rules at the DMV first.

Ok ya that makes more sense, the dealer didn’t do any TTL as I’m doing it all myself. Thanks for all the answers and explanations, guess I’ll wait to get my truck tinted after I do registration this week.

Ya I checked everything out before purchasing and didn’t pay a penny of sales tax out of state cause it’s being registered in Texas only. Sales tax here isn’t so bad and if you do any kind of handicap mods you can deduct that from sales tax. Whole reason I bought out of state wasn’t to save money it’s because I wanted lunar rock and this specific build in 4wd which is hard as hell to find in Texas.

Just move to Oregon, we don’t have vehicle inspection here except emission inspection in the large population areas.

I've heard of 50 state EMISIONS but never 50 state INSPECTIONS. Are you sure you or the dealer didn't get the 2 mixed up?

@RichVT Do they still make you go to your local repair shop every year up there to make sure you have no check engine lights on then slap that sticker under your rear view mirror? :)

Yes they do but it's a lot more than the check engine light.

I don't remember what else they looked for but the shop I went to said that's how they tested emissions. No check engine light and you were good. I know they also put it up on the lift and took a peek.
