Thanks for the heads up on plywood thickness for the back wall. I don't know that I'd have taken that into consideration before cutting it out.

    I ordered some open cell foam for my rear vents. At $2.68 I figured it is worth a shot. M-D Building Products 2006 M-D 0 Open-Cell Air Conditioner Weather-Strip, W X 42 in L X 1-1/4 in T, Gray

It is if you don't lay deadener down. I did the back wall as well as the cubby area under where the seats were and it's real quiet now. Still hear those squeaky ass leaf springs squealing if I have my windows down though.

May I inquire, what is the green mat material and sourced from where?

Mine quieted down, but I'm soundproofed the hell out of it with Kilmat and layers of dense foam. As well as being covered with a solid surface. It's still loud and squeeky though.

Are people concerned with covering the pressure vents with plywood back / goose gear? Any one have noticed issues? Currently everything is exposed in my truck and it’s super loud. Looking for a way to make it more quite with the seats removed.

liking the foam idea however not sure how safe that is.

I did mine with the foam. I ran tests running back and forth on the freeway for 5 miles (10 miles total) with the Jump seats in; with the seats gone, no soundproofing; with the seats gone and soundproofing; and with the seats gone, and soundproofing and foam inserts in using a Sound Meter app I got off Google Play and the phone in my holder to the right of the steering wheel. By far, it was the foam inserts that made the greatest difference (noisiest was the seats gone and no soundproofing). That was a couple of years ago and I'm still alive.

What safety issues could you be concerned about?

I have plywood close to but not covering the vents on my AC. Been this way for several weeks and my windows are not blowing out when I close the door. Defrost still works, but there has not been any bad weather to contend with.

From my understanding those pressure vents are engineered with the airbag deployment in mind. With airbags deployed it takes up a lot of physical space inside the car and the pressure needs to escape somewhere.

not that type of engineer but would imagine that either the airbags are impacted or your going to mess up your ear drums if pressure change is drastic enough.

The way the geometry works with my rear panel is there is still space around that vent.

Well, this makes some sense as to why I have not seen these vents on some of the pictures of the older Gen3 trucks I've seen pictured here. I would hazard a guess that as Toyota added more air bags as the years went by they added the vents, or relocated them. Although I do not recall a lot of holes through the back wall plastic panels to let air flow there.

One thing I did to those vents was to put short sections of tubing on the vertical partitions to keep the diaphragms from hitting them and making a ticking sound as I was going down the road. Mine are permanently open to a degree. This might be some of your sound.

They're actually designed for air pressure equalization, if you're pumping air in from outside the vehicle, with no escape, you will wear the blower motors out really quickly. Air bags may fill a large volume of space but they're not blasting a large volume of pressure to do so - that is all contained within the bag at deployment - like a bulkhead. If you block the vent entirely and turn on the A/C without recirc, you will immediately feel the effects of the blocked vent. If you close your door with a blocked vent, you will immediately feel the effects of the change in cabin pressure, in your inner ear.

I did a rear seat delete recently on my 2013 access cab and found the road noise from this vent to be annoying enough to look for a solve here on the forums. Someone had done a few experiments a long while back, which you can find here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/truck-cab-rear-pressure-vent-research-experiment.124909/

TL;DR on foam: That author tried foam and found it blocked too much air flow. Tape did a better job for him in reducing noise but keeping the air pressure at an acceptable level.

TL;DR on how it works: The vent has a flap in it and this should be closed normally, and only open when the pressure of the cab exceeds a certain threshold. To see if yours is working as expected, look between the back of the cab and the bed of the truck and have someone close a door (windows rolled up). You should see the flap open and close. If you don't, you may have a faulty flap.

In my case, it sounds like the flap is open because I can plainly hear road noise. I'm going to try the door-slam test and see if I can determine the condition of the flap.

We created a small air gap between our back piece (lined in dynamat) and the pressure vent. Sealed the vent hole and side with some open cell foam. Noise is dramatically reduced and feels basically stock. I’ll try to take some photos today.
