    Hello all,

I recently bought some skids for my 2nd gen and I have yet to install any of them since I need to paint them (opted for bare steel). I recently rattle canned my rear bumper after stripping the powder coating and I hated every second of it. Took wayyy too long. Now I have to paint the skids listed below. I wanted to get a paint gun to make quick work after etching and priming. Does anyone have any recommendations on a paint gun they've used for this? Most people seem to not mind using rattle cans and I'm kinda lost after trying to research guns and paint and the ammount I'd have to spend on cans for proper coverage is going to be insane. I'd rather use a gun and keep a matching can for touchups.

I appreciate any insight anyone here might be able to share.

I know these will get beat to shit, but I'd still like to do it right. Also if the gun is also capable of painting body panels that's a plus too!

    Gas tank skid
    Trilogy skid
    Lca skids
    Abs protector

Why would you remove the powder coating? It is better than primer. If it's chipped or damaged you just sand those areas and hit it was some self-etching then repaint them. Maybe next time.

For your skids you self etching primer and whatever color from Rustoleum.Works great.

A lot of people have successfully used the HF HVLP gun for projects like this. Good thing is they’re cheap enough where some don’t even bother cleaning them and consider it a one-time use purchase. Might be an option. With the proper settings you can paint body panels as well, just don’t expect a new-car finish out of the gun.

I stripped it because the previous owner had a bunch of deep scrapes they didn't treat before painting and the surrounding powder coating was bubbling in multiple spots from the rust forming and discoloring the black powdercoat to an oil spill kinda color. Also the az sun faded the PC so paint matching wasn't possible. Looked like ass and I've already put my fair share of scrapes in it already that I just keep touching up after repainting.

Sounds good then. Thank you for that info. I'll start looking into some HVLP guns then. Appreciate it!

Its not nearly as thick or textured as roll on bedliner, but just enough texture to feel and to cover up the blemishes. I dig it, although it kinda "stains" from mud over time so I just respray my stuff if it wont pressure wash out. All my stuff gets grinded off via rocks anyways so I'm not too picky about keeping everything nice
