Hello, sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place. My pops recently passed and I’m likely going to keep his gen 2 and sell my gen 3. Among some detailing inside that needs to be done the exterior paint has some problems mainly sun damage and I know the hood was plasti-dipped at one point but also I have noo idea what happened to the drivers side doors. It’s been like this for years and I don’t remember what happened but let’s say he had some work done and somehow some white over spray? How would you fix this? Is duplicolor a good option? Or Maaco? Thanks for any input!

I know this may not apply to you but I plan on having my 2013 completely repainted at some point in the near future, clear coat chipping on hood, roof and fenders. Personally, I’m going to bite the bullet and pay the 6 to 10 thousand (have received quotes from skilled technicians within this price range, mostly on the lower end) to have it done right. Plan on driving it until the wheels fall off.
My two cents, steer clear of maaco, pay the extra and have it done right, whether it’s just the door or the whole truck.
My condolences and best of luck!

    Than
Thanks! I def don't want to pay 6k for paint cause I'm not sure how long I plan on keeping the truck. At some point I want to move on to a full size. I know wrap is another option but I think even that is out of my budget.

I considered wrapping but it’s damn near just as expensive as a permanent paint fix. There’s no harm in visiting your local Maaco and getting a quote along with a “should I go with them or not vibe,” all free of charge:thumbsup:

If it was your dad's truck. I'd say keep it even if you buy a full-size in the future. You'll regret getting rid if it, trust me!!!!!

    My condolences.

Seems like a perfect candidate to just go get the entire truck repainted cheap by Maaco.

Sorry to hear about your father. I agree, I think you could just have the truck repainted cheap by Maaco if you're not looking for show room quality. You could prep the truck yourself before they paint it to make sure they don't get paint on things that you don't want paint on. There are a few videos out there of people making the Maaco paint jobs look really good but wet sanding/polishing etc.

First, sorry about the loss of your dad. That's a tough one.

Second, as for what that white overspray mess is on the driver side, it looks like spray paint - with no masking - done on a windy day. (The wind was blowing from the front of the truck.) The only way to find out what's underneath it / what somebody was trying to cover is to wet sand / buff the white off. Although this can (generally) be done by an experienced detailer, my sense is that what you'll find underneath it is not good. That's because the photos of the front of the truck show seriously sun damaged clearcoat and even base coat in some areas. The only fix for that is a complete re-paint. Could you use DupliColor? Yes, but it's not going to look very good - nor will any rattle-can paint job. And you're going to have to wet sand down to the primer, then re-prime, paint and clear coat everything. Trust me, the effort will not be worth the results.

As for MAACO, I never recommend them because you get what you pay for and they're the cheapest place out there. How do they paint cars for so little? Very little prep, poor masking and questionable materials and processes in general. Is there a chance you could take it there and have it look better? Yes. There's also a chance you could win the lottery.

If you are going to paint it, just use MAACO.

Dropping 7-10K on a real paint job for a vehicle that is almost a decade old, from a pure financial standpoint, it's fn stupid.

If you are considering dropping 10K on a paint job, well dont. Keep the 3rd gen and sell your pops truck.

    Sorry about your Dad.

Paint is getting expensive these days. Unless you want to paint it on your own which it would be cheaper without those labor fees. I don't trust Maaco because the paint will be messed up over the time unless you use 2nd gen truck for off road, then cheap paint would be good since scratches will happen at some off road places.

Other option for you to consider is keep both trucks which don't worry about the paint on 2nd gen so you can drive wherever you want such as snow or off road... that way you wouldn't worry about scratches or damages. You can drive 3rd gen to good places such as stores, visiting friends, etc...

Sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences.

Thanks all, I think I am going to attempt the duplicolor and see how it goes. It can't look much worst than it does now. If that doesn't work out I will consider doing the Maaco... by the way Maaco is a 3 min drive from my house and went and got a quote yesterday, they said for painting the entire truck with 4 year warranty, and taking out some of the dings here and there it would cost about $3200. At least I have a number to consider. Thanks for your opinions!

Sorry to here about your dad

Like Rick's 2012 said, keep the truck

Best CoPilot you can get is your dad's spirit

    Better NOT get Maaco

Do some research, maybe you can find a body man/painter who does stuff on the side.
