Oil Plug Bolt Stripped Advice 1GRFE

Hi guys, I changed the oil on the truck the other day as I have done countless times in the four years I have owned it, but it now has a leak. I think the threads are stripped. Its a 2014 V6 4x4 so to change the pan the diff needs to be removed and the dealership wants an ungodly amount. I'm considering just retapping the threads but wanted to hear if anyone had any other advice.

Oil change place stripped the drain plug on my buddies 98 Cherokee. It has had a rubber plug in it for yrs. The Jeep leaks oil, but not through the plug.

 

retap it or maybe just throw some replaceable teflon tape on it.

 

I believe lower oil pan just comes right out without removing anything unlike the upper pan which involves diff and cv

 

Make sure it’s not just double washered

 

OP did you replace the crush washer? Are you sure its stripped?

If not get a new crush washer, pull the oil fill cap on the top of the motor and hook a shop vac up to it, turn it on and this will allow you to pull the drain plug to replace the crush washer without loosing oil.

Also i belive the lower metal pan (black) is removable without having to touch the front diff

 

Does it tighten up? Have you ever replaced the washer? Install a Fumoto or the like with some thread sealant and never worry about the threads again?

 

Use thread sealant/teflon tape to install a fumoto valve. Problem solved.

 

Check for extra crush washer, re-tap, and replace with fumoto valve. Never need touch the threads again. Mines been on for 180k.

 

Plug is

$13 M12x1.25 mm Self-Locking Nylon Insert Hex Lock Nuts, Pack of 6

M12x1.25 thread and lists 27 ft-lbs torque. All the local auto stores have Dorman plugs in stock.
Toyota OEM oil drain plug #90341-12012 (old# 12026) about $4 with 14mm head. Washer/Gasket #900430-12031 under $1
Fool may have used power or air wrench and crossthreaded not starting it by hand and who knows shop settings on air.
I would try replacing the plug and gasket as first step. You can look at the pan threads at that time. If you reuse the oil watch for metal threads in it.

 

This was my solution on my wife’s Camry, I tried retapping it and was slightly crooked, so a fumoto valve went in with double washers. No regrets and 200k on it (did this around 80k)

 

Pretty sure you don't need to remove the front diff to change the pan out. There is the upper pan that does need the diff removed to change that out, but the lower steel pan is where the drain bolt is located which you just need to remove the skid plate to access. You can also get a new pan for around $20 and a new gasket for a few more dollars. I don't like the idea of a fomoto valve because I have the fear that some idiot will be evil and open the valve while I'm out somewhere.

 

You do not need to remove the diff to replace the LOWER oil pan, which is where the oil drain plug is located. If a shop told you that run away fast and far from that shop

 

Reading your post verbatim I think it's prudent to first ask for clarification on why you think the threads are stripped? Is the drain bolt spinning freely and unable to be torqued enough to compress the crush washer and form a seal? Otherwise, if the bolt is able to be torqued then your leak has nothing to do with the threads and instead is related to an issue with the crush washer and/or its mating surface areas where the actual seal is formed.

I doubt the diff needs to come out to remove lower oil pan

 

There's a new Fumoto valve available with an adjustable valve body. I just installed one on my 3rd Gen. What is different that would be of benefit in this case is it threads in but seal via o-ring against the surface of the oil pan immediately surrounding the drain plug. If you can cinch it up, you're golden.

The photos on Amazon are not well representing of the new feature in that they don't show the side that houses the o-ring that mates with the pan.

Unless it’s stripped stripped, some rtv on the threads will most likely make it stop leaking. Fumoto is an interesting idea in this situation.
