I think Toyota engineered the truck around the stock tire size. That's why the Pro and Off Road share the same size tires. The control arms are also engineered to work on the truck, with the stock tires.

This is at full lock, on Toyo MT tires.

A lift would not help with rubbing on the control arm. You’d want to move the tire outward, away from the middle of the vehicle, and that can be achieved with wheel spacers or negative offset wheels. However both those options create new issues, such as rubbing on the cab mount, pinch weld, plastic wheel well liner, ect.

How much clearance do you have between the tire and cab mount?

I’d have to measure it, but it has more than enough room to clear….so much so, that I didn’t ever bother to measure it initially because it cleared it by a mile. I think most Pros in the past never had the issues with the cab mount that the Sport’s and OR’s had. I’ll take a look tomorrow.

Put on .75” Bora spacers today and the UCA is in the clear. Of course no good deed goes unpunished and I have a slight rub in the front fender wells at full lock…..on the drivers side the rub is on the forward part of the well, the passenger side rub is in the rear part of the well. Heat gun and a little trimming fixed it.
Because I’m OCD, I thought the wheel poke from these spacers looked a little less on the drivers side than the passenger side. I measured it and it’s about 1/8th of an inch difference. No one else will notice, but they apparently didn’t quite center the rear axle at the factory. Just glad it doesn’t affect anything.
Also measured the distance from wheel to the cab mount and it is clearing by at least 2” on both sides.

Any chance you can take picture looking down the side of the truck? Curious on the amount of poke now.

Here’s a couple of pictures. Hard to capture the true look of them. I am not a huge fan of excess wheel poke, but if this is what will get 285s not rubbing on the UCA, I’m okay with it. I think it looks pretty good, but I would not want much more….but everyone has their own opinion.

I could live with that. I am with you, I don’t particularly like wheel poke but this doesn’t look bad. It looks way better than some of the tacomas I have seen here (locally) that are poking out 2”.

Yeah, I really liked it with just the wheels and tires after they were mounted, but this is fine, and it’s nice to not worry about destroying any of the suspension. I’m kind of OCD about stuff like this, so that doesn’t help….my wife reminds me that know one else sees it as critically as I do, nor cares.
Also, a shameless plug for Motorsport Tech and their Bora spacers. Hands down, THE best customer service that I have experienced from ANY company in the past 15 years. Taylor and Lenny absolutely care deeply about their products and are passionate about getting you what you need to make you happy. Great company!!

I understand your OCD. I’m right there with you. I wouldn’t mind putting 285s on my pro. But with the reduced mpg and then worrying about rub, I might just stay stock size. I might go 265/75. I just can’t make up my mind. I like the look and stance you have.

If you can find a 285 that’s a C or D load around low 50s for weight your mpg will barely change.

Totally get that. Once we got those tire mounted on there, there was no going back. There is a TW member with an ELM Pro with 265/75R16’s that looks really nice. I am sure that those would fit just fine with no rubbing anywhere.
MPG does take a hit, but I like the look, the road noise, and the functionality of these tires….probably has more to do with the truck than the tires. They do kick butt wheeling though, not gonna lie.

Very true. I honestly rarely need E load tires, but like BFG’s and have always had good luck with them. I would love for Maxxis to offer more choices on their AT and MT tires. I hear they are terrific and look great.

I’m heavily leaning towards the toyo open country at3 265/75/16. They are ~40lbs a tire.

The Aussies run them a lot, not really offered here.

No not really. I had to get the tire off the UCAs and the spacers (adapters) did that just fine. I still have some rub in the fender wells; need to get in there and heat gun some more, but too lazy to do it I guess. Love the tires and the look, so no regrets on keeping this size and not sacrificing smaller tires to get rid of the rub.
