Need Help with Engine / Transmission Compatibility.

Hey all, I really need and would appreciate help with some engine & transmission compatibility information. Many of you know that I have been restoring a 2012 2.7L Prerunner with 220K on it. Its running fine but I know that the law of physics will apply to me sooner or later.

I have found a low milage 2018, 20K 2.7 engine and transmission at what I feel is a good price. But I don't have any idea of what is compatible or needed to make for a reliable change over. Is there reference for such an undertaking? I know that the transmission would be my 4 speed to whatever was offered in 2018.

Can anyone help me understand what I would be taking on? Buying like this would allow me to take my time and make ready for the change over given that my engine is running fine. I really like my truck and with all I have renewed to date a fresh engine and tranny would pretty much make it a new ride.


I really would appreciate any help you might off. No disrespect intended, please consider that I know and love the life expectancy of the 2.7.

But I am not asking for opinions regarding whether or not I should consider the change out due to mileage etc. Simply would like to hear what is compatible and the procedure etc.

 

2018 will be a dual VVT engine.
You’ll need the harness and ECU.
I would think the motor and trans mounts would work. But I will let the guys with more knowledge on the 2.7 advise you on that.

 

Not going to work, more sensors on the motor (would need the ECU BCM ETC) and more gears (would need the trans brain etc.)

2005-2015 should work though you may have to swap on or around secondary air injection emissions stuff from motor to motor.

 

Just my luck, This 2018 I found is priced right 20,000 miles on it original. So taking this as gospel, and thanking you for taking the time to advise. The question is if I do go with a 12 through 15 with my truck being a four-speed would it be compatible with a five-speed transmission if I found the right candidate?

 

Are you talking about the 5 speed manual or automatic?

 

Automatic, I wouldn't mind a manual but I don't even dare ask what all would be involved with that changeover.

 

I don't think the 5 spd auto (A750) will even bolt up to the 2.7L, also the PCM and wiring is different and the 2.7L was never offered with the 5 spd auto so other than something custom there's no PCM available for that combination.

Not sure if this will help or answer your questions but the 2TR-FE is currently offered with a 6 speed automatic transmission in the 3rd gen and at one time even offered with a 5 speed MT with 4x4 in the 3rd gen as well as in the 2nd gen truck too..you may have better luck using the current 6 speed automatic transmission thats used for both the 2.7L I4 and 3.5L V6..
