For a stock-ish type tire in a stock size, Costco is a good place to check. They have periodic sales on Michelins, and great 'packages' that are inclusive of stuff you pay for individually at most places.

Oh there will be some mods all right
If you are really willing to put in the time and effort it is worth it to check a variety of tire websites. For example when I purchase tires, which is more often than I would like to admit, I check Walmart, Amazon, discount tire direct, simple tire, tirebuyer, and eBay. Though I have bought from almost all those at least once it seems my best results have been with eBay and simple tire.

True. But membership costs less than what you'll save on many of the ancillary services. Not to mention Interstate batteries are like $99, they have top tier gas, often below competitors cost. And their 3# rotisserie chicken for $7 is yum yum. :D

When I bought tires back in 2017, Discount Tire would beat any online (not E-bay) retailers price. I haven't heard that they have changed their policy

Costco tire service is horrible! Avoid them at all costs, not worth the savings if they are cheaper. Ordered 4 tires for my wife's car, they sent 3, told me I had to file a claim for the missing 4th tire. 4-5 calls of about 30 minutes and 5 weeks later still had not received 4 tires to get installed. Canceled the order and 2 weeks later they still had not refunded me my money. Another 30 minute phone call to finally get my money back that they charged me on day 1 and kept for almost 2 months. I asked America's tire to match the original price from Costco and they did, 4 days later tires were in the shop and installed the next day.

Check your local retailers as well, don't be afraid to tell them you can get it online cheaper, but say it respectfully. I work at a shop that does tires and mechanical, and we constantly hear the same and regularly beat online pricing if we have availability for them. Most places will at minimum match the prices of most online retailers, if they can without taking a loss. Then, you're also supporting local business. Ordering online still means paying for mount/balance/install usually. Sometimes it's cheaper as a whole to keep it local (shipping/MBI). You can also make the local shops compete and drive the price down a bit more as well.

The problem I found with tire shops (local and chains) is that they all seem to bundle a bunch of "free" extras into their price that you may not want or need. Things like rotation, flat repair, alignment (front only) etc.

I bought tires online (from Tire Rack) and took them to my local mechanic for mount/balance only.

I did ask him up front if he could get the tires for the same price (and presumably make some profit) but he couldn't.

How were you charged for the MBI? Lifetime balance? You should be getting alignments every 10k miles regardless for correct tire wear (if the alignment tech knows wtf he is doing. Im OCD and do it every oil change). Got a vibration? How much to rebalance them? There's a bunch that goes in to it. Sometimes that warranty saves you $200 down the road sometimes not.

My employer is a local business connected with a bigger national network for warranty. Our profit margin on tires? 10%. If you buy the road hazard and mess up a $200 tire, we are losing money if you are in the 3 year free replacement. THEY ADDED $5/WHEEL for a TPMS service kit (stem kit) and I lost it on them. $20 for 4 wheels is absurd to me.

Just playing devils advocate. I still order plenty online and found my own tires for my Tacoma cheaper online than I could get at our pricing (I get them at cost).

The tire shops that I looked at were not offering lifetime balance or alignment in their package just a one shot deal and front alignment only so if you needed four wheel you had to pay the regular rate for that (on top of the "free" front alignment that you already paid for when you bought your tires).
