Is the trade for a new Tacoma actually worth it?

    Hi all!!
    Super awesome forum so far!!

Previously tried to search for this topic already, but I didn't find anything recent or too close to what I was hoping for.

Currently, I am paying off a 2019 Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk (non-Elite).
My eyes and want for a truck have me looking at the 2022 Tacoma Off-Road 4x4.
    That's with the:

    • Off-Road package
    • Technology package
I understand there might be some bias opinions here, but is that a dumb idea?
Forgive my ignorance here, but other than the truck bed, would I be really gaining anything other than low odometer mileage?

    All help is greatly appreciated!

Maybe, maybe not. Too many unknown factors for us to chose.

You'll need to compare and contrast things yourself. What's important to you might not be important to another.

Odds are you'd gain reliability. However, that's a really huge factor if you keep long term/high miles like lots of folks here. But looking at dumping a '19, you may not be that guy.

If you NEED a truck bed… it’s worth it.
Otherwise it’s all highly subjective. If money is no issue, get what you want. If money is a consideration, avoid making an emotional decision.

If the only thing your are trying to achieve with your trade is a midsize 4x4 pick up truck. I would order a 22 Ford Ranger Super Crew XL, with 4x4 , with XL appearance package, with FX4 package, and spray in tuff liner... and nothing else.

No offense, but I wouldn't own the current Cherokee (I say that as an old Jeep guy that also owns a TJ). Now is probably a good time to sell/trade the Cherokee, assuming you also don't pay over MSRP for something else?

Besides my Tacoma, I also have a 4Runner. I sold a Liberty over repair costs going up and up (thing was nice, but seems like as it was getting older everything started to fail). I was looking at Grand Cherokee, but I figured it would end up the same as the Liberty. So, I went and bought a 4Runner. If you don't have to have the truck bed, also look at the 4Runner. Both honestly have that cool factor, mixed in with longterm reliability and excellent resale.

I would certainly dump any Jeep with the opportunity presented (high resale value) and ability to get out ahead on the deal. Jeep resale craters for a reason, tacomas do not. Tacomas don’t live in the service center at higher mileage. Take the opportunity and run with it, your new tacoma will also hold insane value in the future- the Jeep will be worth like $5,000 with high mileage. Call 10 dealers today and make the move- stop hesitating

Check out selling to Carvana before trading in your Jeep (get trade in quotes from dealers first).

    Less than 2 weeks ago:

Dealer offered $13,500 then upped it to $14,000 for my daughter's 2011 Wrangler (actually in my name) on a trade for a '22 Subaru Forester. I said NO WAY!

Blue booked $15,000+ (trade in) & $17,000+ (private sale).

SOLD to Carvana for $19,009 with NO farting around!!!!

Depends largely on what you owe, and what you can sell or trade in the Jeep for. Buying anything new is a major hassle right now.

We had a GC until 80k miles, flawless suv, super super good... The cherokee has a lot of space in the back seat I think it's 40 inches or close to it in legroom.. what it lacks in cargo space in the trunk, it more than makes up for it in the rear legroom... You've got a solid choice as is (especially if you have children and car seats). You'll gain the truck bed, resale value, aesthetics, and depending on your current ride it might be a pleasant surprise for you. To me the GC was a standard in quietness while riding, I can only imagine the cherokee not being too different. I think the new Tacoma interior will also wow you. Layout is better and there's more space.

I'd suggest getting both a carvana and a carmax quote. We sold the GC to carvana, they paid $3k more than the dealer and over $1k5 from carmax. While you're at carmax getting your trailhawk appraised, test drive a Tacoma. You'll want to feel how the truck behaves getting in and out of the highway, parking, and transitioning gears. The cherokee has some pick me up to it, I drove a v6 before, they're super easy to park, speedy, and the rear legroom is spacious (I've got a 2 year old - it's been no issues with the Tacoma and the car seat). Whereas it might not be a priority to many, I enjoy the technology package and it's been quite helpful in early mornings while taking my kiddo to school.

Like most others have said it's tough to give any advice without more info.

My wife has a 4Runner that I was very close to taking over, then getting her something new. For me, the 4Runner is the only vehicle I would consider giving up a truck for. Always loved them. But after really thinking about it, I just didn't want to be without a truck. With fishing, open water and ice, I didn't want to have to fold down seats every time I went out. And I would rather toss bait, slimy nets, gas and propane tanks(etc) in the back of a truck instead of inside a vehicle.

And I like being able to pick up any larger items for the house, lake, etc. Some people are okay with borrowing a friend's truck for that stuff, but not me.

But only you know what you want/need.

I looked at one this morning, but was unable to sit in it, as it was being purchased.
The rear was actually a lot bigger than I thought it would be. So that's awesome.
No kids here and none planned for the future.

    Thanks for the great details!

    I want that luxury too.
Had a Ranger a good while ago and I sold it for the down payment on my house.
Still wish I had it for all those things you mentioned, plus my mountain bike stuff.
