I've been playing around with this a bit for the last couple weeks. This old setup has gobs of power, sounds amazing, takes up less space than home amps & gives me one more excuse to hoard old hotness. I think Ima work it into the rack & see if it works out. Anybody else putting closet gear to good use?

Out in the garage I’ve got an old single din pioneer head, a few 6.5” speakers in some generic boxes, and a 600w kenwood monoblock pushing 2 12” kenwood subs. Makes for good car wash days

i used to in high school, 20 years ago. when money was tight, and goodwill nearly didn't exist. my parents home theater ran a free bazooka bass tube off a salvaged garbage can computer power supply for about 10 years until i got around to building an 8" sub that fit in the limited space they had.

now, a decent stereo can be picked up at goodwill/thrift stores for $30 with speakers, so i haven't bothered with 12v stuff wherever i've got a wall outlet.

I went the other way. I had two way house speakers with 12” woofers in the hatch of my CRX.

    I was poor.

Heh, yeah, definitely used some home cabs in my Civic at some point. We'd take 'em out to the hangout spot, toss 'em on top & rock out all night off a head unit. Without much of a point of reference it was the jam. Of course they got used in the vehicle too 'till somebody showed me what was up.

Not really going for cheap with this though. That Mac is easily my best amp. I've used it with a Schiit Modi 3 from .wav flies and an 80 PRS set totally flat and am convinced the Pioneer sounds better. They're playing a pair of old school Polk S8s at the moment, and if wood ever gets reasonable again, will get a custom set of cabs at some point. This is just for a 2.0 setup. 5.1 is all separate.

This little experiment also came with an unexpected surprise. I never thought I'd say this, but amps do matter a whole lot more than I thought they did in the past. And I'm not completely convinced anymore that good Class D is all the same as good Class AB. The Mac is incredibly good at around 25 years old on original parts. The sound stage compared to other amps is broader and more clearly defined. It does get warm after a few hours, so some cooling will have to be worked out, but it's a helluva lot cheaper than a similar home amp from the same folks.
