Late in the day, but still a Friday thread contender!! Congrats!!

I can't even recall the last vehicle I owned that had a matching wheel/tire for the spare. I mean I know there were some out there, just not many.

Just be glad you don't have a mini donut spare, or worse, an inflatable donut spare, as many of the 80's had. Even Buicks.

Better yet. Buy run flat tires and just throw the spare away. Save weight, better MPG!

The spare tire size is larger to make up for the smaller rim. The outside diameter of the spare is thus about the same as the service tires/wheels.

If you want a matching spare, it's going to cost you. Mine cost me more than $500, including the wheel, tire, sensor, installation, etc. (That's why it rides in the bed rather than under the truck.)

And as another note, the TPMS only holds 4 sensors. If you do a full matching fifth wheel/tire/sensor spare, and want to do a 5 tire rotation, you'll need a sensor tool to adjust your TPMS each rotation.

    (@eurowner, I said that correctly didn't I? :anonymous:)

From what I have read here on TW, is the 3rd Gen TPMS ECU/PCM will crash if there is a 5th sensor in the vicinity of the range of the system.

Run flat and no spare tire is actually worse MPG. Run flats weigh more than regular tires so that extra unsprung weight.

On my 09 OR I used my 11 year old spare tire for 2 days last summer and barely noticed it. It wasn’t dry rotted just dirty. The worst part was the rust and crud that made deployment difficult.
I believe that was the 3rd time Ive used the same spare TEMPORARILY. If Id have to guess Id say it has maybe 150-200 miles total on it over its lifetime..

So no added expense that I can see. Im happy to even have a spare tire nowadays.

Hard top camper...many more to add+
Lots of truck manufacturers are cutting corners….We all see that in the Tacomas, …
As far as for going off the roads…. You will want a matching spare tire(s)…. Many will only buy 4 tires / rims and not even upgrade the spare tire size or rims..not sure how spare off sets will fit many lift kits?

I purchase 5 rims & tires all matching…. My sons 2016 Tacoma also matches in tire size and rims..nice to know we are able to help each other if needed…

Getting a flat tire doesn’t happen often…but when it does? The wrong tire size & rim? UM? In 4 wheel engage?

tire repair kits nice to have…fix-a-flat too…. I use to sell potato chips…on this new highway near my home…the first year I got 8 flat tires..on my van…all in the rear…got lucky because of the duel tires..able to drive to nearest tire shop…new highway was 30 miles long ….no cell phone in those days, no business on either side of the highway too..just a few hotels today…

Carrying the correct rims & tires… a must for off roaders…

Spare tire should be a needed MOD…agree or dis agree…

At least the spare on the Tacoma will last longer than the crap donuts for cars.

Pretty sure all ne Broncos and Wranglers come with 5 of the same tires on 5 of the same wheels. Regardless of what trim level you drive.

One thing I don't like about the 4Runner, at least it was this way on the 4th gen. The spare is mounted under the truck like on the Tacoma. Which is fine, but the jack and tire tools are in the rear cargo area. You have to remove what ever cargo is in there to access the tools. Toyota should have put the jack and tools under the rear seats.

The rest of us who actually go off-road got rid of the factory wheels and tires upon vehicle delivery

Wonder at what point that changed? My 2016 shipped with all 5 tires matching. 17” spare as well. All were the 265/65/17. Went with 265/70/17 BFG’s and had one replaced 3/4 through the other’s lifespan so when I got new tires I just threw that one on the spare wheel so I’ve got a spare almost new AT ready to go, fit just fine as it was already a 17” wheel. Strange thing to change but hey, didn’t they also get rid of some of the bed side cubbies in the newer model years too? Granted I have no power rear window, or power tailgate lock. Win some you loose some I guess.

Probably just cost-cutting and/or alleviating supply chain shortages. 2005-2007 Tacos even had a 5th TPMS sensor in the spare. That was two recessions ago lol.

I've driven about 1100 miles with three 32" Duratracs and one 31" factory spare tire over a mix of on/off-road with no issues, no ABS/VSC malfunctions. 4WD still worked as normal.
