D rings through Bed bolts

I've read through the older posts but I could not get any clarifying information. Can the bed bolts fit through the OEM D-rings in the front end of the bed?

I want to add more tie-down points. Have any of you encountered any reasons why adding D-rings to the bed bolts is a bad idea? There also seems to be no information on the torque specs for the bed bolts. Do any of you know?

 

I added new D-rings...the OEM ones. Toyota calls for them to be placed on the sides of the bed wall, like around 65mm up and 70mm back from the front. I like the location. The problem I see in using the bed bolts is that the D-rings won't rotate properly, and now you have a higher protrusion on the bed floor. Given the exact specs that Toyota called for, my D-rings sit just a few mm from hitting the bed floor and fully rotate. I think the torque spec was like 26 ft lbs. They came with directions.

I have run the D-rings under the bed bolts on a 2005 gen 2 and now on a 2021 gen 3 with no issues. The D-rings will still swivel. The bed bold has a roll mark near the head to keep the washer on. You will need to hit it with sandpaper/Dremel/grinder/file to knock down the roll mark so you can remove the washer, it's a minimal amount. Then hit it with some primer or paint. The D-ring fits on the bolt with no problem.

The Toyota D-rings work fine but they are stiff. I'm thinking about trying the sprinter D-rings others have used.

 

Here is a photo of how the correct placement of the D-Rings are to be installed. Also be aware that the bed bolts are designed to be slightly recessed, so that sliding cargo into the bed doesn't get damaged or dinged by the bed bolt heads.

What’s the point of hitting the bolt with primer?

 

I used the same kit that is supposed to go in the side of the bed under the bed bolts. They do not rotate easily, but that doesn't bother me. You'll also have to dremel/sand off the collar of the bolt as the D rings don't fit through if you don't.

Could the use of D-rings mounted to the bed frame through the composite body of a 3rd gen handle enough force to winch a 3-point farm hitch/implement?

I mean like a hoist/boom pole (500-800 ponds when weighted), landscape rake, rear blade/ small blade box, etc.

 

All of my OEM D-rings will spin around, but the D-ring itself won't lift. I don't know if it would if I applied more force and I don't know if its designed to or to basically remain flat. Nonetheless, I would not want to apply 500-800 pounds of force on any of them.

 

Thank you for replying. I agree on the existing stock D-rings I am wondering if there is an upgraded version for this kind of setup use that could handle this. I am fairly sure there is something out there that could be bought or fabbed that would work well enough for some things. The weight of a blade/blade box/rake are negligible if run from the hitch itself. The boom pole/s is the one that concerns me the most. Not only is the pull coming from variable angles, the added weight of hoisting heavy things isn't all that static. Basically, the lever/fulcrum force would be putting added pressure on the D-and bed/frame bolt and the variable angles would increase/decrease the load weight.

Maybe something akin to the above pic but not as large and hitch mounted. I really just need something that could stablize the pole/s if I went with this type of system above. I think that would work if I would get the back-hitch (chains in pic mounted near the cab holding the uprights up) bolted to something solid. My primary need is to occasionally lift a couple hundred pound concrete block and move them a few feet, and secondarily, lift and few logs. I am not trying to pull stumps or tow anything heavy with it, just an upgraded DIY small scale Taco crane.
