Hey all. So I fired up my 2008 with 213,xxx miles up over the weekend and noticed a noise I haven't heard since owning it about a year now(bought last May). I'm wondering if the mechanically inclined out there who have superhuman hearing can help me identify, or at least speak intelligently at a mechanic shop about what the issue might be. I've attached the noise in a zip file. Seems to be the loudest under the truck. Again I can do the small stuff but I'm not super inclined on mechanical workings of the truck. All help is welcome, if you need pictures I'll do my best to provide them. Thank you TacomaWorld community!

Dang, I cant distinguish the noises. Does it change with RPM? 1st suspects are the bearings - PS, alternator, AC, tensioner and/or idler pulleys.

So, I haven't looked at the PS(I know the reservoir is full), maybe the alternator(I had the battery tested over the winter and it's amperage and voltage check out). I refreshed the AC last summer, now factory cold. In terms of the tensioner/pulleys is there a way I could check those myself? I'd like to note that the belt that was on it was the source of another squeal so I had that replaced last summer as well. Am I way off to think something with the driveshaft needing grease? The sound occurs under load and in park neutral if that helps.

The driveshaft does not rotate in neutral; so it cant be that.
To test the bearings, remove the serpentine belt from the tensioner - you don't have to pull out the belt. Once the belt is removed, you’ll be able to check each pulley. There should not be any side to side play. Rotating each pulley, it should feel smooth, not gritty-like. The PS may have some fore/aft play, but no more than 2mm. Maybe also the AC, but not the alternator nor the water pump.
I find it easiest to approach most of the pulleys from the bottom.

Does it help if the sound it more prominent when the engine is cold and idling? Seems to be less after running for 10 minutes or so.

That tends to point to a bad bearing; a noisy one will tend to quiet down once it warms up. You still need to ID the culprit. This may help before removing the belt:

Took it to the shop for inspection today, had them look at it. Alternator and idler pully need to be replaced. More than I was hoping for but glad to identify it early. Crazy that the original alternator lasted 213,000+ miles. Maybe this is standard on these trucks but seems like an awful lot. Passed inspection easily otherwise. Thanks all for your input.
