don't think you could leave the gear out either, without it there is nothing holding the shifter in place and it could quite easily pop in and out of 4 hi 2 high low or neutral.

I prefer to empty a 6-pack of PAM into the t-case. It has to be either coconut or avocado though, the regular peasant shit just wont cut it in these trucks..

also... never had an issue camping/wheeling with mine running 75w-90 :boink:

I have a MT and this sometimes in the case. For anyone reading this with an MT, sometimes I have success after switching and rolling backwards (foot on the clutch). I get stuck every other trip out it seems, but it usually only takes a moment to correct, and the rolling backwards trick has worked every time so far

Its a shame that these trucks were not designed to do water crossings deep enough to cover the transfer case solenoid. They are too easily flooded and corrode. Wondered if OP did any before his trip?

Don't really agree, I've had these units apart they are pretty well sealed up. There really isn't a solenoid either its actually an electric motor driven worm gear. I really think its to well sealed and the unit has no way of getting rid of any water that does get in due to condensation.

I dunno, I had my truck for 4 years and had no issues with 4WD system at all. A lot of switching between 4hi and 4lo over the years. There were times when it took 4-5 secs to get outta 4hi into 2WD but never an issue with 4lo.

4WD system on my ranger engaged pretty much instantly, I did buy it used with 50k miles, maybe that’s why. I only have 35k on my taco.

I actually go through the whole four-wheel system and actuate it at least once sometimes twice a month. Exercise the actuators.

Yeah I always thought every vehicle you buy comes with a manual. I don't think anyone reads it though.

I try to do this but ends up being more like once per quarter if I haven't hit the trails. There are a few short dirt roads I do it on where 4WD isn't no way near needed but I feel better doing it there vs. on pavement. When on pavement. I only do it for a short distance and only driving straight.

I did not know this was even covered in the manual!

We also need to know if we need to send a recovery squad up into north Georgia... TW never leaves a man behind.

Oh here it is. What does one do if they don't have a convenient 10 mile section of loose dirt road to drive on?

    Oh look, another mod....

Prop it up on jacks (leveled of course), put in 4L or 4Hi and then step on the gas for 10 - 15 minutes.

Find a fairly straight section of rode and you'll be fine.

just go into 2 wheel drive for any sharp turns and you should be fine on pavement.

yeah, it's hard to find a 10 minute dirt road that's convenient.

I try to run 4H when it rains but worry about 4L on pavement. It's it OK if wet?

You’re right, solenoid was not the right term- it’s an actuator. But quite a few here like

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4wd-issues.759367/#post-27072627

have had it flood though after high water crossings, so as a result many have done the breather mods to help prevent the issue. Some who haven’t modified them have also ended up with water contamination in their dif oil as well.
The truck just isn’t designed that well for water crossings in its stock condition.
