The abrasive saws have their place but there’s a few things to consider if you plan on using it a lot. The cold saws can be used for various materials using the same blade. The abrasive saws tend to have a lot of deflection in the blade so making straight small cuts is near impossible and you’re better off using a grinder. Plus the cold saws make less of a mess (little to no sparks) although the metal chips are still hot and can be annoying.

I haven’t used my abrasive saw since I got my evo.

You'll be happy with it. I have the baby version and it's a beast, so the extra capacity of the bigger one should be nice.

This ended up being perfect. Instead of building it up too much I conceded with getting a 2.5" drop on the hitch to make up for the remaining difference. Still a lot of work to do, but getting closer

Are you happy with the blade life, and if so, what brand and cost are they. I have the Evolution. I didn't feel my first blade lasted as long as it should have gone. 100% mild steel tubing and angle. Carbide started chipping off and it was pretty much toasted after that. Just a rough guess, but I'd say around 100 cuts at it was dead. That's not enough for what they cost.

I am on my second Evolution blade, with probably half the cut qty that the first. Still okay at this point.

Just curious what your using and how you like it.

+1 I also have the baby version and it’s been awesome. Super loud though. Think I got it for $140 back in the day.

Big facts cold cut chop saw over abrasive chop saw. I had a dewalt abrasive saw and got the Evo above when I started my trailer build. The cold cut saw makes perfect miter cuts. As mentioned don’t miss sparks, smell, or even the slag. But it’s not without its negatives. From a DIY garage shop perspective I can’t stand the sharp barbed chips the cold cut produces. In my garage they go everywhere, I track them in the house, and even pulled more than a couple out of my 4 year olds foot… I’m slowly coming up with a hood design with magnets to catch most/all the chips. Did it on a whim at first with a quick frame and blanket, worked good enough to try and make something more permanent. Similar to what wood workers have to catch saw dust. I do love the Evo chop saw but I think if I was to do it again I would look for a bandsaw chop saw setup. Same precise cut, less shrapnel to deal with. I try to use the portaband with swag table as much as possible bekuz easy quick cleanup.

I'm still a portable band saw guy.

Just the noise those make turned me off.

I wear ear plugs 100% of the time and those saws were still too loud.

    No thankyou.

Finally finished up a firewood rack.
I painted it black as per all my steel projects and before adding the tin roof I got it in place and started loading it up. Quickly realized the inside measurement between the corners was 26” and the split would was going to roll right out the side unless I stacked it like a pyramid which is pointless. Added another 1x2” in the center on the sides and decided to repaint the whole thing grey with a white tin roof to match the house. It wasn’t my intensions I guess at first but matching the house looks domestic AF for a firewood rack hah8BC68803-1809-4844-9D87-632EEF3EC59D.jpgA7EEC8E1-70D7-45DA-BA77-D5CC1D1D3DC9.jpg 8A79715E-BC6C-4EA2-9705-0A57708353FF.jpg7DB1741F-735A-4962-9844-1B7D1CC050A9.jpg

Also how good the miters are with the cold cut chop saw.
    No prep after the cuts..

    Nice rack!

Looks like we had the same priorities recently. Just finished the roof over mine last Sunday. I still need to finish sealing some rubber strips where roof meets wall, but otherwise, ready for wood(TWSS)!

My pup used to get those chips in his paws too. Horrible experience trying to get those out for him. I since made a magnetic sweeper with the (previously free) harbor freight tool magnets. I now use it to sweep my garage and part of my driveway whenever I do any kind of metal work.
