As FYI, menards sells a transfer switch kit that works good for 300. Just need to buy some wire and conduit to run from outside switch to the transfer switch. I installed mine a month ago and happy so far. I've cleaned up my install since this Pic, but you get the idea. Two load meters so you know what you're pulling.

This is very similar to what I used to have. Never really liked it.
2 years ago I had an electrician install a new circuit box for the whole house. It has a built in transfer switch. I can now run whatever I want just by flipping a circuit.

I agree a whole home switch is better. For the money though it's a good option. Plus it allowed me to install instead of paying someone.

In my case we needed to upgrade/update our panel box. We had no more room for additional circuits.

So I have done some digging and realized I have a real problem.

I cannot shut the power off from the street, period.

I have been all over the house etc. power box etc. and while I can shut off the power to the the 4 sub/boxes [house, shed, A/C, stove] - I cannot shut off the incoming power at all.
IDK how this is okay by code etc. but it is what I am working with so pfft - - - I also don't know how I didn't catch this before now..

I could back/feed - re/route the dryer outlet to an inlet and shut off the house panel from the street and run what I need to that way, but that seems a bit sketchy.
I also cannot use an interlock on the house panel b/c the shut off to isolate it, is outside on breaker box by the power meter - not at the top of the house panel like most people seem to have.

I am really not happy about any of this, but some of it does lend some credence to the expensive estimate I got -
The house isn't even that old - under 15yr - but still - the fact I cannot isolate the house from the street is not fucking cool at all.

I may just jump to plan B - get me my freezer + generator + cord and call it a day - cause this became hella messy, hella quick.

I'm fascinated. Didn't know this was a thing. Thank you!! Going to research Square D panels now. 200 amp service I take it right?

I have the same switch. Was going to get a Reliance Controls switch box but my electrician referred me this switch instead. Have not had a chance to use it yet tho.
