I generally prefer to trade. Tax laws vary, but here I pay tax on the difference. Which is 7.5%. When I figure my time invested, I'd need to sell my old vehicle for about 10% more than the trade offer just to break even. Closer to 15% to 20% to be worth the hassle. Buyers agree to meet then don't show and they all try to lowball you. If you don't sell quick, then you're paying insurance on 2 vehicles until you do. Buyers have to pay the 7.5% tax when they get a new tag and will always try to get you to eat that, or at least meet them halfway.

It also depends on the value of the trade. A beater selling for under $5K is easy enough to sell for cash and the tax on something of that value isn't a deal killer. But if the vehicle you're trading/selling is worth over about $10K then it starts getting easier to just trade.

Yup, look on local Craigslist too at least to see what similar ones are listing for privately. My motto when doing that is ask a little more and write a better ad if you do list it yourself.

I traded my 06 Chevy Colorado on my Tacoma. I'm sure I could have got more privately but having a major engine failure on a 5 year old truck already made me distrust it, it was worth the peace of mind to not have someone buy it from me and then complain after.

My wife's 05 Rav4 was worth pretty much zero for a trade in 2019 so I listed it on CL. Really think I sold it too cheap re my asking despite high miles and the hood paint looking like junk but it was basically what we spent on the down payment for her 2014 Rav. I get it though, a dealer selling new and almost new doesn't have any use for a 15 year old vessel.

No respectable dealer is going to give more than its worth toward a new vehicle. They might want to make look that way to you.

Except for the situations when it's not, such as tax-advantage states.

Trading a vehicle in for a $5k less than private party sale price, while saving $5k in taxes on the vehicle you're wanting to buy, is a financial wash in the end and the advantage is you don't have to deal with all the dumdums that want to waste your time and widdle you down about every cent while their Craiglist grind-bros fill your inbox with lowball offers trying to make it seem like a fair deal.

Yeah I just laugh at those commercials Nissan dealer saying they will give you %110 the value of your trade. I think I even heard one before claiming they would pay you double for your trade. No way they are even going to give you a respectable amount for your trade, with out rolling something into your monthly payment on your new Altima.

McDonald's is always hiring. I always like to tell people at work, who complain about being at work. You don't have to work here, there's the door.

Still must suck to deal with customers who can take their business elsewhere.

Hard top camper...many more to add+
Most car dealers will offer the Kelly blue book value…expect this,,due to the high demand…they may add a few $$$ more..?
if selling on your own ..best to meet the buyers at a very crowded place…one is for your safety…instead of home…. Getting the money I would meet them at there bank? Cash the check..then sign the papers?

If they offer a lower price ? I would Let them know you will keep the for sale sign up ..till end of the week ..and if NO one gives you a higher offer you will consider there offer…
On the first day of my ad, I sold my 57’ wagon , a guy low ball me and I sold it…hours later, and the rest of the week..I got better offers…those days you paid for ads in a newspapers…
    Aloha

What ever you want, there have never been so many models of vehicles available from every manufacturer. There are 3 to 4 new or updated vehicles announced each month that will soon be available.

Here are some 2022 new vehicles

How about a mid engine Hyundai?

Looks like there will still be lots of ice vehicles available in the immediate future.

I recommend getting a trade in offer at your Toyota dealer and shopping it around to other dealers. The dealer that is needing inventory the most will likely pay the most for your truck. Currently with dealers wanting to buy vehicles outright, it is easier than selling to private individuals.
