For some reason I stopped getting notified from this page, which is my favorite thread along with the jdfab 35s one -- but that one more-less depresses me b/c I probably won't ever get those goods. Glad to be back and I have a lot of reading to do to get caught up ... I figured I'd share today's project where I cut and welding caps on some doors for my fj. I picked this gem up last month and have no plans other than putt around town for a bit and learn as much as possible (about carburetors, distributors, points, wiring, desert mud that has been caked on for 15 years, etc.). Current plan is to get familiar with the truck, save a bit more $$$ and figure out if it's going to turn into a rock or mall crawler ... we already know the answer, but time is the question.

The original doors were already cut where you should have a frame and a window (ranch truck). The before pic shows the square door, which I couldn't stand. I also have no top and the roll bar was added later so making that look better is somewhere on the list. I have been door-less for the past 2 weeks, which is awesome. They're on/off in a few minutes. I do have some young kids that I feel a tad better having the door between them and the other cars.

    How it looks now ...
    upload_2022-4-17_21-16-56.jpg

    ... before ...
    upload_2022-4-17_21-9-2.jpg

mocking it up ... measuring a dozen or so times ... ready to cut ...
    upload_2022-4-17_21-11-27.jpg

looking pretty good. sitting behind the weights waiting for a 2" 16 gauge strip and some time ...
    upload_2022-4-17_21-12-27.jpg

the fun begins. Tack welding and mild hammering to get it lined up ...
    upload_2022-4-17_21-13-10.jpg

bit by bit ... I'm used to 3/16 and 1/4 ... 16 gauge is thin ... but a flap disk will do wonders ...

... the flap disk wonders ...
    upload_2022-4-17_21-14-55.jpg

... some good looking low cut doors ... sprayed with a bit of coating to keep rust away while I figure out what to do about the color. I have a can of the original color but I'm sure it's a bit brighter than the original '73 faded paint ...

Yea I justified a nice magnet sweeper after so many metal splinter incidences. My only problem with that is I need to clear the floor of trailer build and some other things to sweep. As well as I always get under the weld table and other books and crannies around it with a shop vac. It became a point where I would procrastinate using the Evo saw just cuz I knew the clean up process that would come after..

Not welding but welding related -

    20220418_200754.jpg

Finally moved into our new house last Thursday, so I finally opened up the welder I had bought a few months ago.

Now I need to buy some gas!

    Just for the tank right?

    Called Praxair...or was it Airgas?

125cf tank for Argon is $380, and to fill up it's only $60.

Wondering if that's the rough going rate?

Sounds about right, my medium sized tank was $330 out the door for a "brand new" one.

80 is plenty if you’re not welding every day on a production level. I have two 80s so I don’t have to stop in the middle of a job for a refill and even then one tank lasts me a long time.

Pre-flow and post-flow will add to consumption, and I was going through an 80CF about every week and a half; this was with me being the only one using said machine.

I can go 80CF for 75/25 but for straight Argon I know I'll want a bigger bottle.

That's a great price for the 80CF though, so really I'll order it for a MIG setup.

It's good to have the big cans until you need to handle them. There is no way to grab those heavy fuckers to lift them onto the welding cart perch

I got a 60 filled with 75/25 shipped to my door for about $200. Cyberweld rules.
