Have a new truck coming in and sadly it has the port installed door edge guards. These are the clip on ones, not the clear tape. I want to remove these safely. Videos online show these gently tapped on with a mallet so they are friction fit, not adhesive. Has anyone removed these? How easy is it? Was there any chipping or marring of the paint? Appreciate any insight.

No personal experience with this type of guard, but as a general rule, if it's a friction fit that needed to be pounded on there is a high probability it damaged the paint underneath.

I have a personal dislike for them as it implies that I might be a door dinger.

The clip on type usually have a glue strip in the bottom of the U. On a warmer day, they should be soft enough to peel off if you start at the end.

Even the best automotive adhesive (3M VHB) will peel off without damage. Some cleanup might be needed.

I installed my oem edge guards and they really go on quite easily. The reason you use a mallet is if the sticky adhesive tape grabs the door before the edge is fully seated. The mallet makes sure its pushed all the way onto the edge. So its more the adhesive than the crimping holding it on. Id carefully use a heat gun and start removing from a rear door first. That way you can get a feel of how its going to come up. You shouldn’t have scratched paint although Im sure you may have leftover adhesive to remove after.

    Like, so many.
I always go with a hair dryer over a heat gun because I feel like there's more room for error with a hair dryer. I don't use heat guns very often though.

I did find an actual Toyota video on youtube showing how the techs are supposed to remove them.

I'll probably remove mine too. Too me they look kinda like suspenders with shorts.

Oh really? Could you please post the link? I’ve seen a few people say they just pop off but I’m terrified of chipping the paint while doing this. Was thinking of maybe soaking the area in cash wash soap to help lube the area.

Actually after watching the video I'm not even going to link it. They are pounding it off with a plastic scraper and a mallet!

Warming it up (even in the hot sun) and peeling it off is better.
