I'm using the term "knock" because I don't know of a better word to describe it. It's most noticeable from idle to about 1200 RPM, then I can't tell if it goes away or is just drown out by the other engine sounds. It's not the typical tacoma "tick"- drivetrain/fuel injector noise, nor is it pre-detination since it happens at idle not under load.

I've taken it to the dealer (more than once), they say they can't hear the "knock", and everything is normal. I haven't heard another tacoma in person that sounds like mine. It been making this sound for the last 30k, and seems to slowly getting worse. I did find a youtube video that makes exacly the same "knock" though (listen carefully- again not the tick)- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EhpON-xDgLA

The sounds is strongest from underneath the pickup on the drivers side.

I have about 10k left on my certified warantee, and would like to get this fixed, if for no other reason because it sounds like shit.

    Thanks in advance!

I can hear it seperate from the tick. Its hard to say with these engines whether its bad or normal because of how noisey they can be. Mine on occasion makes a similar noise, along with all the other ticking.

I will say if that noise was really pronounced, it would sound similar to a bad crank bearing. But like I said, these are noisey motors.

If it were rod knock (or crank bearing a crank bearing issue), wouldn't it be more pronounced under load, and at all rpm (and consistent)? Sometimes, there is no noise at all.

If it's nothing to be concerned with, it's pretty damn annoying to say the least.

Mine is loud to, sometimes weather and humidity depending its louder, when I got mine I was wondering why it was so loud. Under a load or accelerating hard does it get louder around 2000 RPM's? Mine is way loud under load at that RPM's and sound like 2 valves are smashing together. Was told I could get a flash to help that noise tho but haven't yet.

Mine doesn't really get louder at higher RPM, that I can tell anyway. Actually, after about 1500rpm it seems to go away.

Sounds like a diesel. Having said this, if it was really a problem you would think it would be worse under a load and at higher RPMs.

I agree that it is annoying and hope mine does not start this.

Exactly. I was at a stoplight yesterday beside a dodge 2500 w/Cummins, makes the same sound..

Does it cold, warm, etc. Engine temp doesn't seem to make a difference. But some times it doesn't do it at all. I'd assume whatever it is is ok since it hasn't grenaded in 30k miles. It's just super annoying for a $30k plus truck sounds like a shitbox.

Anyway do some research on piston slap. I think that is the issue, yours just seems to be a little worse than normal.

Sounds like piston slap. I had the same sound, mostly when cold.

But then one day I threw a rod bearing....now THAT was a knock. lol

Right.. I know what piston slap is. I put together a 22RE with forged pistons back in the day. That thing had cold slap like crazy. This "seems" different (completely different engine), but you may be right.
